Vista trys and then fails to hibernate after installing GRUB and dual booting with Unix
I've tried this on two machines and got a similar result. They both
hibernate correctly with only Vista installed. After installing
OpenSolaris which introduces GRUB for multi-booting, Vista continues to
work perfectly fine with the exception of hibernation.
I tried this previously on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which I have since
reverted back to Vista only, now using SP1 and it hibernates correctly.
I am now using a Dell XPS 1530. I confirmed prior to installing of
OpenSolaris/GRUB that the hibernate function performs correctly when
only Vista is installed.
Using a clean build, I've installed Vista on its own 64GB partition
(320GB drive). Applied SP1 and confirmed hibernation works, all good.
I then installed Solaris Express Community Edition (B85) which
introduces GRUB for multi-booting on its own 64GB partition. At this
point Vista continues fine with the exception of hibernating.
Hibernate is enabled correctly, and I have disabled and re-enabled
using powercfg -h on/off to confirm. I have also confirmed the existence
and removal of hiberfil.sys while doing so.
When selecting hibernate, the machine starts to entering hibernation
which the screen blanking and the disk active. It then just returns to
where you were.
I have checked the event viewer and there are no entries related to
power management.
In researching hibernation issues with Vista, I run the bcdedit command
which returns with:
"The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system
cannot find the file specified."
Under the startup and recovery tab I've system properties, there is no
entry for the Vista OS as I assume the Windows boot loader has been
replaced by GRUB and is doing the same function.
Should I be able to enter hibernation on a Vista installation that is
using GRUB to boot?
Cheers
