Yes, you hadn't said it was a laptop until you mentioned the battery
charging OK - as you've guessed, it's not the main battery.
How to fix it - you have two problems (three if it's an obscure sort):
1. You have to figure out how to open it up to find where the cell in
question is. (The 'net may help, but you probably need a service manual,
which are often not as freely available as ordinary manuals.) Just hope it's
not soldered in when you get there ...
2. As Jeff has said, you need the password even after you've replaced the
battery (probably a cell actually). Unless you're lucky and it only defaults
to needing the password when the cell is flat - or there's a link on the
board that lets you in.
