Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

I'm trying to test the use of Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008
Standard but I can't quite get it to work. I've installed the Terminal
Services Role and published my Remote Applications using Office 2007
applications for the test. When I try to access the programs using
http://myserver.com/ts using Vista SP 1, I can see the programs on the web
page and even open them (e.g. Excel) but I immediately get an error message
saying " this feature is not supported", and I can go no further. I should
mention that my Vista SP1 is a virtual machine on the same Windows 2008
server, running under hyper-v. I'm too new to virtual machines to know if
that's causing my problem. I should also mention I tried to connect to
Terminal Services using XP Pro SP2, but had no luck because apparently I
don't have the right version of RDC. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

Hello Dan,

Before you install TS Web Access, review the following installation guidelines:

. You must install TS Web Access on a computer that is running Windows Server
2008.

. You must install TS Web Access together with Microsoft Internet Information
Services (IIS) 7.0.

. The TS Web Access server does not have to be a terminal server.

. To use TS Web Access, client computers must be running RDC 6.1. (RDC 6.1
[6.0.6001] supports Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1.) RDC 6.1 is included with
the following operating systems:

. Windows Server 2008

. Windows Vista® with Service Pack 1

. Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3) Beta or Windows XP with SP3 Release
Candidate (RC)

Also did you follow this guide for installing:

Thanks for responding Meinolf. I feel like I've done all these things
correctly since I can get to the point where the application (e.g. excel or
word) is actually opened in TS Web Access, meaning I can see the
spreadsheet. The problem is that as soon as the program opens I get this
error message that says "This feature is not supported, contact your system
admin.". I don't have a copy of XP SP3 yet so I can't try that, and as I
said in my first post, I'm using Vista SP1 for my tests but its a virtual
machine on the same 2008 server. Any other thoughts?

I think I figured it out. I can't use my version of Office 2007 in a
terminal services setup apparently, even just to test things out, which is
what I'm trying to do.

Re: Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

Hello Dan,

The second link i added should be the version for XP web access. AFAIK Office
2007 you can install on TS without any problem. So how did you install it?
With change user command or via Programs and features?

Re: Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

I think I used the Install Applications in TS mode in Control Panel Meinolf,
but perhaps I'll try it again since I now see some additional instructions I
may have missed. However, I'm trying to use a retail version of Office 2007,
and the article below suggests I can't do that, even for a test. I do get a
different error that what's in the article though, mine says "This feature
is not available", and the error message is coming from the Office
application, not TS.

Re: Trying to Test Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services

Hello Dan,

Thanks for the link, didn't know that details. Do you have a Technet Plus
contract? There you can get a Volume license version and also a lot more
for testing ofcourse and not for production. TechNet Plus is not expensive
and really a good source for all actual versions from MS.

Best regards
