Hi,
Due to a non profit organization we have limited funds, so at this time I
have the resources to backup data every night but it replaces the backup
every night it doesn't append to it. I'm using the NT Backup program, with
that being said I had a user yesterday delete a file over the network, the
file was stored on the server and they where at thier workstation. I came in
today and they said they accidently deleted the file yesterday, obviously
with the backup running last night it over wrote the file that was there, is
there anyway to get that file back?
Thanks Craig

If you overwrote the .bkf file then there is no chance to retrieve it.
It's time to review your backup operation. You could add a further
disk to your server for a ridiculously small amount of money and
use it to store all user files for several days before overwriting
them. This would nicely complement your current off-site backup
process.

Surely they can swing for a few removable hard drives so you can swap them
out & store backups offsite. They may be a nonprofit, but they can't afford
to lose their data any more than a for-profit corporation can.

That said, if you run W2003 or up and have volume shadow copies enabled, you
can restore it from the "previous versions" tab - heck, the user can restore
it him or herself if they have the VSS client loaded on their workstation.
If you're not using something with VSS (or don't have it enabled already)
the data is gone.

RE: restore file

Hello,

Thank you for your post and as well as to Pegasus and Lanwench for sharing
these information.

Unfortunately, if you have already overwritten the backup file, there is no
way to achieve lost data from that .bkf file. You can try some third-party
to retrieve these deleted data from the disk if you haven't made additional
changes to that disk. However, it is not easy to do this.

To avoid the same problem in the future, as Lanwench mentioned, the best
way is to enable Shadow Copies for Shared Folders. Shadows Copies for
Shared Folders uses the Volume Shadows Copy service to provide
point-in-time copies of files that are located on a shared network
resource, such as a file server. This is easy to configure and easy to
retrieve any accidentally deleted files. For more detailed information
about this, please refer to:

Introduction to Shadow Copies of Shared Folders:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/scr.mspx

Besides, you may need to download Previous Versions Client for Windows XP
and Windows Server 2003. You can download them from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=20487

I hope this helps.
