SBS2003 Network issue?

Hopefully this is the right group.
Quite suddenly in the middle of this week, all users started reporting
difficulties accessing the Internet (404 errors) and additionally could not
access a unix server application. Then their Exchange sessions started
dropping out and then reconnecting at frequent intervals, synchronisation of
folders became intermittent too.

browstat shows the server as the master browser and I can find no errors
anywhere, although it will pick up the unix server any attempt to browse it
via Explorer results in an access denied error. This smells like a DNS issue
(just a hunch) but the config looks ok.

Now staring at a complete rebuild of the server and not relishing the
thought (seems a sledgehammer to crack a walnut) type approach.

Any comments suggestions hints tips gratefully received!

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

Hello ratman,

Run dcdiag /v, netdiag /v against the DC. Also post an unedited ipconfig
/all from the server and one problem client.

<adding microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs group>

Do you have ISA installed and do you have SBS R2 with WSUS?

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

No ISA. WSUS installed but not working properly (another problem for another
time). Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server + SP2

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

IPConfig from both the server and a client, as has been requested.

and try www.sbsbpa.com, run the BPA against the server. Could be one of
several things it will pick up.

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

Have run sbsbpa and it highlighted a number of issues - including task
offloading and EDNS enabled. Have corrected both issues and will have to
wait till Monday am
to see if it provided a fix.

One thing still puzzles me and that is why has the server run for over a
year with no problems and then suddenly decided to throw a wobbly?

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

Sometimes problems can remain unnoticed until the server reaches a threshold
of traffic, or the incompatibility gets exposed because of an update
installed on the client, or a myriad of other things. It isn't uncommon.

Re: SBS2003 Network issue?

Happy to report problem solved. If you send me lots of money I'll tell you
what it was! LOL!

It was a network issue and nothing to do with the server. After applying the
fixes and diagnostics suggested, the Server appeared fully functional, but
the problems remained. So moving on I decided to check the network for rogue
devices or problems. This particular network has 2 16 port Switches and 3
smaller hubs for localised sharing. Each unit was removed from the network
in turn and when a small Linksys 5 port hub was removed, the network sprange
back into full life. This particular hub is now decorating my wall of
infamy.

My appreciation to every one who bothered to respond and provide useful
suggestions and hints. I have learned from this experience but I am now just
a little older and greyer because of it.

Thanks!
Geoff
