Hi,
I've looked around the newsgroup already for similar problems and solutions, and found a few.. but nothing that was helpful to me or solved my problem: Windows Update successfully downloads update packages, but it always fails to install them. The error in the WindowsUpdate.log file is:
> 2008-05-11 05:43:59:921 1660 a54 Service WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0
> 2008-05-11 05:43:59:968 1660 a54 Agent * WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240020
I have read KB943144 (and a few others as well). However, I've never re-installed or repaired Windows on this computer. With the exception of anything done by various Windows updates over the past two years (when I first got this computer) and one virus over a year ago (which seems to have caused me startup errors with svchost or something, but does not seem to cause any other problems), everything is pretty much as it was when I first got it. I also only had one account, which is the administrative account, so there should not be any problems with access rights.
For the record: I did create a couple new accounts, one with admin access and one without, to try seeing if that would have any effect. It did not. I also followed both possible solutions to the KB article, even though I have not repaired/reinstalled. Again, that did not work, either. At all times, I have not had virus or spyware protection running, and I am not firewalled on this PC (I'm pretty much using my router's NAT to keep my PC "firewalled"). I have also disabled or unloaded any non-critical drivers or services, so I could minimize any conflicts or problems with files in-use during the update. I have also given almost wide-open access and security on my PC.
Here is what I have done.. At first, I simply wanted to update my system since I had not in six months. At first, Windows Update insisted I update the Windows Genuine Advantage stuff before proceeding. It downloaded, then failed to install. I tried the steps I wrote above to see if that would solve it, but those did not work. I then manually downloaded the SP3 package (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) and ran that from the command line console. It installed and rebooted my PC without problems. I then went back to Windows Update to make sure I got any updates since the SP3 release (which there are like 14 or so).. This time, the WGA seemed to work fine with SP3, but the additional updates all did the same: They'd download, but fail to install with the same error.
Here's what I am looking for.. Either a solution that works (the KB article was originally something like 2004, almost four years ago!) and restores my ability to use Windows Download manually (I do not like leaving on automatic updates--every time I've done that, the automatic updates have totally FUBAR'd my last PC. I swore I'd never do that to this one..) OR something to help me figure out how and where to download the updates and apply them manually from the command line.
[PS: I infrequently check any of these newsgroups, as I do not like the web interface, and I use Pegasus for email rather than OE. Please CC any replies to casteele@gmail.com, thanks.]
