When I use Windows Update to try to install XP SP3 it fails in the "Preparing
for download" step with error code 0xd0000409. I have tried this five times
and each time it fails in the same way. Here is an extract from the
WindowsUpdate log:

Things to do prior downloadin/installing SP3.

1. Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you
install SP3,

2. Test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly.

3. Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.

4. Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.

5. Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware;
third-party firewall) before downloading/installing SP3.

6. Reboot twice after installing SP3.

7. Run another Defrag.

I'm not so sure that is just an "error code".
I suspect a crash is occurring and what you see is its recovery.
In other threads 0xC0000409 is referred to a as
"an unknown software exception" which would be consistent
with this idea.

Are you getting an event log entry or a drwtsn32.log snapdump
for the same event? If so you may get more clues from them,
in particular drwtsn32.log's Stack Back Trace which would
show which modules and calls led up to the crash.

In any case I think what I would do is try running ProcMon
to trace whatever registry and file accesses precede the error
event. That could also show you a list of modules which were
involved in any crash event, recoverable or otherwise.

However, if you just want to try to install this update and
not bother with any diagnosis, you should probably try downloading
the update and installing it manually. That would hopefully avoid
doing the "express (delta)" update that this is.

Good luck

Re: Windows XP SP3 update fails

Thanks for the useful information Robert. I check in Event Viewer and there
are error log entries. They all say the same:

Faulting application update.exe, version 6.3.13.0, faulting module
update.exe, version 6.3.13.0, fault address 0x00061a7b.

Re: Windows XP SP3 update fails

Yes, I did a re-install of WinXP SP2 a couple of weeks ago. Then I had
problems from that time on with Automatic Update - no updates would install.
In the windowsupdate.log I was getting this error:

FATAL: MSI DLL version is 3.0. Version 3.1 is required.

I fixed this by:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

After that all automatic updates installed successfully.

I then tried to install SP3 through Windows Update and started to get the
current problem.

Re: Windows XP SP3 update fails

Thought that might be the case.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

updates to winxp sp3 etc

updates to winxp sp3 etc

not to be a complete simpleton... but, it looks as though i would reinstall all your drivers that you know are complatable with your OS, reformat (save all files on external harddrive if possible) Install OS on clean slate...then questionable drivers last. DEFRAG - START AND COMPLETE ALL UPDATES AT ONCE IF POSSIBLE.. COULD TAKE 25 HOURS..
:)

RESTART - FLASH BIOS IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY...(LAST RESORT).. NOT PAINFUL THOU..

YOU SHOULD HAVE A SOLID SYSTEM IN END. IVE BEEN ON WIN 98 - VISTA.. AND WINXP HOME IS THE STRONGEST BOTTOMLINE ENDESTRUCTABLE OPERATING SYSTEM BESIDES MAC OF COURSE... UGH!
