Having previously installed WS2K3 SP2 manually on selected servers, including
domain controllers and having no issues, other than that some 3rd party
applications' management consoles don't work work with MMC 3.0, I went ahead
and approved SP2 via WSUS for roughly 100 servers in a remote data center.
Most of these servers now have SP2 running without any issues, so far.
However, on four servers, SP2 will not install. When I attemtped to install
SP2 on these servers interactively, I received the following message:
--------------------------
Windows Service Pack 2 has detected tht one or more protected files on your
computer have been modified. The Service Pack contains updated versions of
those files, which work to provide a stable environment for your programs.
If you click Yes, the updated versions will overwrite the current files and
you might lose certain customizations creted by third-party programs,
especially those that affect the graphic displayed when your computer starts
up.
If you click No, the computer might fail or stop responding.
For more information, see the Knowledge Base article < > at http://support
..microsoft.com.
Do you want to overwrite the files?
------------------------------
This message appeared twice, followed by "Service Pack 2 installation
failed. Internal error, regardless of whether I choose Yes or No.
I have taken the following steps, as suggested in various postings at
different Web sites:
1. Ran sfc /scannow and rebooted, attempted to install SP2
2. Booted server into safe mode, enabled DTC, attempted to install SP2
3. Re-registered msxml3.dll, wups.dll, wuaueng.dll, reset authoization on
wsauclt, stopped wuauserv, deleted the SoftwareDistribution DataStore,
restarted wuauserv and rebooted, attempted to install SP2
Nothing has worked. Any idea what is going on?
Thanks
