I am typing recipes for a cookbook and would like to use the degree symbol.
How can I create a shortcut key to use the symbol?

While holding down the ALT key, use the numeric keypad to enter 0176

What word processor (or application) are you using to type the
recipes?
If you are using recipe software, then some (like BigOven) already
have the option to insert a degree symbol.

If you're using Word to type your recipe, create a Word macro.
If unsure how to do this, ask a Word newsgroup.

This is what character map is made for. Its optionally installed off
your cd, so if its not there you have to go into add/remove programs and
add that windows component back in.

Its in the accessories menu. Open it up, pick the same font, find the
character you want, click on it and copy it to the clipboard. Now you
can paste it into any application.

If you're in Word, use Insert|Symbol. Scroll the box up about four
lines, and you'll see the degree symbol on the right end of the row.
Select it, and you'll see that you can get it any time by typing
Alt+0176 (on the number pad). You can also use the "Shortcut key..."
button in that dialog to assign a key or key combination to the
symbol.

Re: How do I create a shortcut key for a symbol

Thank you so much. I can now type the degree symbol using a shortcut key and
can more easily continue with typing recipes for my cookbook. Thanks so much.
