page file fragment problem

I have an odd problem with my page file getting fragmented. I have XP Pro,
SP2, 2.0G Pentium 4, and just upgraded from 1.25G to 1.5G of memory. I
always adjust my page file to 1.5 x min 3 x max. I always keep my drive
defragged and never had a problem. I also use Pagedefrag and have never seen
my page file with more than 2 fragments - ever. After adding in more RAM
and adjusting my page file, I ran chkdsk and defrag, then checked Pagedefrag
and saw my PF had 14 fragments!

I tried deleting the PF, defragging the drive then recreating a new PF, 9
fragments! So I have temporarily resolved the problem by setting the PF
static 1.5x min and 1.5x max.

What could be causing my PF to fragment so? I don't do gaming on this PC and
have scanned it for viruses and spyware, both of which came up clean.

Does the partition have less than 60% free space? The pagefile is placed
in the middle of the partition. If the partition is over about 40% full
other data will already occupy where the system would like to place the
extra section of the pagefile. It cannot put it there so it places it
elsewhere. Result fragmentation.

If the situation is marginal you could try running Disk CleanUp and Disk
Defragmenter before making the change. Better still cCleaner but you
still need Disk CleanUp to remove restore points.

The default allocation to System Restore is 12% on your C partition
which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb. Right click your My
Computer icon on the Desktop and select System Restore. Place the cursor
on your C drive select Settings but this time find the slider and drag
it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the
Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

The System Restore changes may just enable you to get a contiguous
pagefile.

Thanks Gerry, I have already long ago performed all that you mentioned,
however I am replacing my HD this weekend as I have 30% free space
currently. According to what you wrote, that is the key for a contiguous PF.

Re: page file fragment problem

If your computer can accomodate more than a single hard drive then you
can keep the original drive as master and make the new second drive a
slave. This avoids a clean install and collecting up all the drivers you
need. You can then create a dedicated partition at the beginning of the
second drive to hold your pagefile.
