Re: Bad disk or virus?
It was bad sectors! I put the drive in a USB2 carrier, then plugged it into
another computer that is also running XP Pro. When I booted the computer,
it discovered the problem on drive "E:" (the USB disk). It fixed the boot
records on that disk, and fixed (replaced) some other bad sectors. I put
the disk back in the original computer and it's like I never had a problem!
Microsoft sometimes isn't so bad

Hello,
See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185
under "Damaged File System"
Note that it is good to have a backup (via using a Linux Live CD or other
method), in case CHKDSK makes it worse

Do I have a bad hard disk or a virus? I did a virus scan maybe 30 minutes
before I got this problem. The normal Windows XP Pro displays on the
screen, like it normally does when starting up, then the system gets the
blue problem below (saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been
shut down to prevent damage to your computer"). When I start in safe mode
it stops, displaying the black screen below (ending with "DontGo.sys"). I
installed the disk in a different computer and the problem occurred, telling
me the disk has the problem, not the computer. TIA, Paul
