Inserting disk causes DVD Rom drive not to be detected

XP Home, SP2 with latest updates
The d:\ drive is a Sony DDU1621 DVD rom player, which is supposed to
play all kinds of disks.

The last time (3 months ago) when I played any disk on the d:\ drive,
there was no problem. This week whenever I insert any disk into the d:\
drive, it freezes: the green light comes on in front of the tray, the
yellow light comes on indicating c:\ drive activity (I think), but
nothing plays. This freeze happens with commercial CD’s, CD-R’s,
commercial DVD’s, DVD+R’s, DVD-R’s, and DVD-RW’s. The eject button on
the tray is dead and the d:\ drive disappears from Windows Explorer and
My Computer. If I reboot with the disk still in the tray, the drive is
recognized, but Windows Media Player asks me to insert a disk. When I
then eject and reinsert the disk, the drive freezes again. (My DVD
writer (the e:\ drive) plays and writes with no problem.) I have almost
no knowledge about hardware. Suggestions and guidance would be appreciated.

Maybe one of these:

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Have the defective DVD/CD drive replaced.

Thank you for your speedy response, which I intend to pursue. Do you
have suggestions about a replacement make/model or can you guide me to a
site where these drives are evaluated?

and LowerFilters, but no plain keys. Is this as it should be?

CD/DVD drives in general are all about the same now. Some writers have a
better reputation than others - some are liked by some people more than
others (for example - I like "Plextor" drives, dislike "Mad Dog" products.)

Given what you have - I know your drive is a a pure ROM (DVD & CD - Read
Only Memory). If you want the same - lots of people have luck with Lite-On
brand (WalMart, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc and so on.) Essentially - if
you go to your local electronics store (or electronics department of a local
megastore) - you can get a replacement DVD player (IDE/EIDE) and it will
come with a new cable and instructions... Should cost less than $40 -
$60... Possibly significantly less.

If you want a CD/DVD writer - a little more. Lite-On is good, Plextor is
good IMHO.

Where does it say "backup"? I haven't seen that one..
