I have been trying to run Audacity 1.2.1, (an older version which
seems more stable on Win98SE) but which seems to be corrupting the
driver for my AC97 sound card, which I have to continually reinstall.
I am not much of a techie so is there another similar free audio
recording program or programs I can try. Thanks.

Depends what you mean by Free. GoldWave's trial version runs pretty much
indefinitely, with increasing nags (or did for me; YMMV) - but I don't know
if the W98-compatible version is still available from them. (When I started
using it a lot, I bought the software anyway - it wasn't expensive then. I
haven't checked recently.)

Goldwave is pretty good (much better than Audacity), and inexpensive.
For Win98SE, he should look for either versions 4.26, or possibly 5.12 (I
think that was the last 5.x one that worked with W98SE, but I'm not sure -
but GW on their site always recommended the older ver 4.26 for Win98SE
users). I bet it's all still available on the GW site, but if not, he can
Google for it.
