How do I stop I.E.7 from reloading ctfmon.exe.

I am running XP x64 - I.E. 7.0 - 32bit version.

On the advanced tab I have unchecked "Always use Clear Type for HTML *"
and restarted the browser.

I have unregistered the .dlls using the run commands
"Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll"
"Regsvr32.exe /u Msctf.dll"

I do not have "Alternative Use Input" installed with any Office Programs

In Regional and Language Options>Languages>Details>Settings - only the
keyboard service is installed.

I open I..E.. right click on a link and open in new tab or window and it
comes back on - reinserts itself into HKCU registry
and then causes pages to hang and the browser will not close - until I kill
the process....which is always a child of I.E.7.

For the times when I do get I.E.7 to close then ctfmon.exe hangs - restart
I.E.7 and it reopens with a second instance.

ctfmon.exe has always been a problem since its inception

Can someone please tell me how to kill it without trashing my system. This
would be greatly appreciated.

I think you will be well adviced to study this phenomenon carefully:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/ctfmon/

has info that might be valuable to you, and links to ways of testing what is
going on. It is my opinion that there is more information there than what
you can expect to harvest here.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

Tony;

Thank you for the - thought...being that I have done everything else to
stop it from loading it could have been infected with a virus.

Uniblue's SpyEraser reports that my system is clean - not even a bad cookie.

I use this machine only as a workstation. Video / Graphics editing, Flash,
Web site building / editing.
I do not cruse the internet. -
I go only to sites work related Adobe, Microsoft, Nvidia, Asus.
And to sites that I have built / uploading verification / maintenance etc.

Consistently the problem is this:
From a desktop shortcut - I open I.E.7 - it opens under the system process
svchost.exe -
ctfmon.exe opens as its child process.(verified by sysinternals process
explorer)

I close I.E.7. ctfmon.exe does not close but instead remains open and is
moved down the
tree as a user initiated process with no parent.
I reopen I.E.7 - the home pages comes up - I click to open a new tab and
I.E.7 locks up.
I cannot move the window - I click home page - nothing happens - I go to
favorites click
a link - it comes up but I cannot close the new tab. I cannot close or
minimize the browser.
I cannot click back to the first tab.

I kill ctfmon.exe and I.E.7 functions normally.

This cannot be how Microsoft intended this to work.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

I have next to no experience from IE7 and it's typical errors, this doesn't
sound very typical to me. Have you tried looking in your 'Event Viewer' for
any messages concerning CTFMON or SVCHOST?

I noticed how the site specifically recommended NOT to disable CTFMON - in
your place, I would probably contact MS or search the KB for more
information. Seeing that you have done some fairly deep digging on your own
and know what is going on around your system and it's use, I think you
should 'stick-to-it' - my suspicion is that this is an error that is
triggered from somewhere else, not from where you first get to see it.

Unless someone else have had the exact same thing, I don't think there are
any short-cuts or incantations that can help you right away.

If I was being stuck right there, I would probably try and un-install IE7,
test my DotNet installation and Java/Flash and then re-install everything
with frequent re-booting in-between steps.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

Microsoft has a FAQ on ctfmon.exe at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599

See if there is any useful information there.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

Internet Properties>Advanced>uncheck "Always use Clear Type for HTML*"

I have determined this setting that fails to function when using I.E.7 32bit
browser
on XP x64.

This setting does however stop I.E.7 64bit browser from loading ctfmon.exe.

Now, how do I get M$ to fix it?

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

Are you the only one with this problem? If so, it may be
something on your system causing the problem, such as a
corrupted file. And I would not expect Microsoft to repair
your system for you.

I personally do not have any problem with either of my
Internet Explorers 7 in Win x64.

Are you indicting you stopped using ClearType for HTML?

I have the box checked in my system and use ClearType for HTML.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

Correct - I have unchecked the box - I start 64bit I.E.7 and ctfmon.exe does
not load
as a child process.
Then I start 32bit I.E.7 and it loads ctfmon.exe and with it come the issues
when opening
a new tab and trying to close it.

It has also been my experience on XP x86 that from time to time ctfmon. has
caused
multiple issues for many many people - hence the KB articles written for
people who
have had issues and need to turn it off.

And no - I am not using both browsers at the same time.

It is apparent that 32bit I.E.7 on XP x64 ignores this setting to not use
ClearType for HTML
and when it loads, it automatically inserts itself into the registry - HKCU
to run on startup
with Windows.

Please try un-checking the box - start 64bit I.E.7 and see if it loaded
ctfmon. If not
then start 32bit I.E.7 and see if it is loaded.

I use "sysinternals" process explorer to view these actions.
Sysinternals newly acquired by Microsoft 2006.

Re: I.E. 7.0 on XP x64 - ctfmon.exe

I don't know what causes ctfmon.exe to be started during
boot, but it is running when Win x64 boots up. Both I.E.
64-bit and I.E. 32-bit have the block checked to use
ClearType for HTML. Neither I.E. cause any kind of problem
with Win x64 and I can have both versions of I.E. running at
the same time without any problems.

I cannot remember of ever having a problem with ctfmon.exe
in Win XP 32-bit either.

I still think there is something specific to your system
causing the problem.
