Windows 2003 Server

Hi,
I have a new Dell server with Windows 2003 server and have a few questions I
hope you can help me with:

1) Network has about 10 PC's on it and it set up as a WORKGROUP. Will W2003S
let me confirure it in the WORKGROUP or will I need to convert to a Network
w/a Domain?

2)If I can configure W2003S as a Workgroup, is there any reason I should
convert network to a Network s/a Domain or is it best to leave as is?

3) Is there a way to copy users from old W2000S to the new W2003S or should
I just build them from scratch since there are so few?

Hello KenP,

For management of user accounts it will be easier to create a domain. Any
user is then able to logon without creating local accounts on all 10 machines.
Password management will be centralized in one database, ressource management
also, you can use group policies for the complete domain and install software
for example.
But if you use the server as domain controller you also have to think about
backup of the DC, if it will be the only one. If this crashes you have a
lot of trouble. Or you have to think about installing a second server as
DC for redundancy and failover.

I have RAID on system and only plan on backing up the server because all user
and application files would be on the PDC. Is that still an issue or ?? Other
than haveing to change each machine, would it be a lot of trouble or cause a
lot of problems to change all machines from Workgroup to DOMAIN?

Hello KenP,

If all important data is on the server and you back it up, should be fine.
Do not only relay on the RAID, if the RAID controller fails you also be lost.
But as i said, also the server itself has to be backed up, at least the system
state, what is the mimimum you need, to restore the domain controller.

If you switch over to domain you have to add the clients to the domain (one
time only). User accounts has to be created new in the domain and the user
will get a new password and new profiles will be created on the workstations.
But if needed you can copy the important data from old profiles, NOT the
complete profile itself, to the new created profile with an administrator
account. By 10 users this will be the easiest way i think.
