Hello

I am trying to figure out what is happening with the following problem. The
objective I want to achieve is so easy, that I am really astonished that I
can't do that simple thing. I want to connect to my Windows 2008 as an
administrator via remote desktop without installing Terminal Services. I have
read that this is possible. We have a solution based on windows 2003 and we
haven't got any problem with connecting via remote desktop for administrative
purposes. We want to migrate to windows 2008. I have fresh install of Windows
2008, I have checked "enable remote desktop", then I have choosen middle
radiobutton ("less secure", I don't remember correct spelling in
settings),then I have added an administrator to list of allowed users (I
think that administrator is a member of Remote Desktop Users group for
default).I have turned off windows firewall service for sure. And I am trying
to connect from my Windows XP SP3 machine to that server without success.
Computer is thinking for about one minute and message with "can't
connect(...)" is going to appear. I have another Windows 2008 installation,
which in future will be an Terminal License Servel and this server has got
Terminal Services installed - I can connect to that server without any
problems.
So I want to connect to my Windows 2008 server without Terminal Services.
Do you have any advices ?
Thank you in advance

PS.
I can ping my server.

Are there any warnings or errors in the EventLog on the server? If
so, check here:

Is the server listening on port 3389? Check with netstat -an
Can you telnet to the server?

Hello

Thank you for your immediate answer. I have made some checks and figured out
that I can telnet to my server on port 3389 from client computer. I have also
no events in my server log. There is no popup with login when I try to
connect to my server..I have also figured out that I cannot remote desktop to
any computer from my server.

So you're using the rdp 6.1 client, correct?
Have you checked the settings for server authentication?

Here are the details:

951616 - Description of the Remote Desktop Connection 6.1 client
update for Terminal Services

Hello

Thank you for your support - in software layer everything was ok - the
problem was with the switch. Switch has been cutting frames into small pieces
by default and because of it the remote desktop hasn't been working.
We have changed switch options and now everything is ok

Thank you
