You can't defrag from DOS, regardless of whether you have an overlay installed or
not.

I don't know why you are not able to boot to DOS....I don't think it is related to
the overlay at all, though. Are you trying to start in DOS by using Command Prompt
Only from the boot menu before Windows is loaded, or are you using the Start>
Shutdown option to Restart in MS-DOS Mode?

I would have just created two partitions. Make the first one 32gigs
(or less) and the second one 8 gigs (or more).
Then you dont need that software from the drive mfgr.
(Those smaller partitions are a good place to store digital photos or
music).

Certain BIOS limitations will not allow use of a drive over their limit,
period, without overlay. The problem is associated with the drive sector
addressing...
