I used Microsoft update which attempted to install SP3 on XP Pro, but it
failed when the status changed to read something about updating or making
registry changes... About 5 seconds later it said "Access is denied" with
only an ok button; afterwhich it went through the whole uninstall
procedure.

I've run in to problems with other Microsoft software and updates with the
same type of issue. I don't know why or how it happened, but the registry
has several keys that the administrator owns but doesn't have write/update
access to. What I need is for the SP installer to change the registry key
ACL's by itself (or present me with a list of all the keys that need
write/update access (before installing) so I can change them myself).
Since it takes about a half hour to get to that point and another 15 min to
uninstall, I can't try to figure this out one key at a time.

Here's a portion of the log:

Re: WinXP SP3 Update Fails with ACCESS DENIED.

I too had this problem with repeated attempts to Install WinXP SP3

Finally, I resolved the issue by Uninstalling Windows DEFENDER.

Once DEFENDER was removed, followed by a restart. SP3 then installed without
a problem.

I was running both Defender & McAfee. But I think I'll rely on McAfee for my
security now and not bother to reinstall Defender

Hope this helps

You didn't disable Defender *and* your McAfee application(s) before
installing SP3?

Re: WinXP SP3 Update Fails with ACCESS DENIED.

when running xp3 and defender you must allow xp3 to continue when WD pops up
and asks for permission for it. If you do not do this xp3 will fail.

Re: WinXP SP3 Update Fails with Access Denied.

you can also download dial-a-fix
at
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

You can we try to reset the permission by performing a Secedit.

Click on tools and then scroll down and select reset permission, it will do
it automatically and once the step is completed restart the computer and
then perform your installation.

You can we check in registry if there is an restricted user account created
you can remove it manually

this is what i did one of my computers when this happened and it worked

Better yet, disable Defender prior to installing SP3.
