Hi,

I have snmp service configured to receive/send snmp packet to a
specified server. Every now and then, the service crashes and I was
unable to restart the service. The only way to get the service running
again is to reboot the server.

The following is from the event viewer.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error

RE: snmp service is not stopable

is your server fully patched? does it say why you can't restart the service?

Re: snmp service is not stopable

The server is fully patched. When the snmp service hang, I will not be
able to stop or restart the service. The status (on the services.msc)
would show stopping, but it never finish the stop action. I tried using
SC to stop it from the command line and it is not successfully. The only
solution is to restart the computer.

Re: snmp service is not stopable

Any luck? I'm having the same problem on my 2k3 server. I have snmp enabled
because I'm using Dell's IT Assistant and Server Administrator.

Re: snmp service is not stopable

No, I am also using the Dell IT assistant (on another box) and server
administrator. I am waiting for the next scheduled restart to clear the
state of the snmp service. I am also having similar problem on my other
Dell server which has the snmp service configured.

Re: snmp service is not stopable

I resolved it. Bug with the Server Administrator version. I installed version
5.4.0.1 which addressed this exact issue.

snmp service is not stopable

I do not have a fix for the snmp hanging, but you do not have to reboot the server to get the snmp service running again.

Taskmanager -> Processes tab -> End Process for snmp.exe

This will allow you to restart the snmp service.
