Hello,

I have been tasked with how to handle folder redirection in what is a soon
to be mixed environment and then eventually just a Vista environment. At this
time we have XP clients, that have their My Documents folder redirected to
user work spaces located on one of our servers. I am having trouble wrapping
my brain around how to combat the new user profile structure in Vista and how
to make a seemless migration between the two OS's. For instance in this first
upgrade wave, I need to recreate the folder redirection on the upgraded vista
machines to mirror what we already have but in Vista terms: My Documents vs
Documents folder etc.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

This part is automatic. In Group Policy if you redirect My Documents (XP) it
is the same for Documents (Vista).
You can redirect the four XP folders if you want to, and they will be the
same in Vista.

Re: Folder Redirection in Mixed Environment XP\Vista

I may be just missing something, but right now all users files are located in
the auto created My documents folder within the their personal user share.
With Vista, this folder would be "Documents" if the documents folder was
redirected. Thus leaving all the XP machines to have access to there files
and teh vista machines access to a blank folder.

I'm not quite sure the best way to ensure a user can access his user work
space from any vista or XP machine they may log into.

I think I;m answering my own question here writing it out, but any more
feedback would be helpful.

Re: Folder Redirection in Mixed Environment XP\Vista

There's a good explanation towards the end of this document:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=73760 Managing Roaming User Data
Deployment Guide. My Documents or Documents is just the display name for the
Shell Folder. Provided you redirect to the same place in Vista and XP it
will be seen by Explorer as the Personal shell folder, which is displayed as
My Documents or Documents according to the OS. You need to use a Vista GPO
to create a new redirection or modify the XP version, but in both cases you
will redirect to the same physical location.
