Hi,

I’m building a computer. I want to run Win XP Pro x64 because I’m told that
people are still having issues with Vista. I’m getting most of it from Tiger
Direct. It’s a Visionman Cube Intel Barebones PC.

This is what I will have:
BenQ G2000W LCD Monitor (XP 64 is OK / Vista 64 has issues)
Thermaltake LAN Box
Asus P5N-MX Motherboard (Comes with 32 & 64 bit drivers)
Onboard Video
Onboard High-Definition 6-Channel Audio
Onboard 10/100 LAN
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor
Ultra X-Wind Copper CPU Cooling Fan
4GB High-Speed DDR2-667 Memory
585 Watt Power Supply
500GB Seagate Barracuda ES.2 Hard Drive
Mad Dog #MD-20XTLI LightScribe 20X DVD-RW (LightScribe 64 bit drivers)
Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard (64 bit drivers)
Ligitech MX400 Performance Laser Mouse (64 bit drivers)
Canon MP530 all in one (64 bit drivers)

Am I better off with XP x64 over Vista Business x64?
What x64 bit Internet Security Suite Software do you recommend?

I have an HP laptop with XP Pro x32 bit that I am replacing with the above
system. I’m very happy with XP Pro right now.

Interesting question. I ghosted my XP x64 install today and put Vista 64
on the same machine, very little difference now the drivers have matured.
Main problems are (a) finding things, goodness knows why MSFT moved them
and (b) Tree Views and List Views having very, very feint highlighting
when they are not focussed.
Advantages (a) Xp x64 is a Cinderella OS and it seems easier to get Vista
64 drivers and (b) some apps that use context menus work in Vista 64 but
not x64.

I sit behind a NAT router, use the Vista firewall and ESET Nod32 64 bit
version. I need to check if Windows Defender is on here, the install is
only a few hours old.

I have my x32 XP Pro laptop setup with the classic Windows look. Can Vista be
setup to look like a classic version of Windows? I never liked the XP look.
Vista is so different it probably doesn’t have that option.

Re: XP x64 or Vista x64 and Internet Security Suite Software ???

XP Pro x64 is a good OS and not a bad choice but Vista x64 will give you
more device support. XP64 is not getting the software support of either XP
x86 or Vista. I just don't see a good reason to prefer XP64 over Vista x64.
Vista has gotten a lot of unfair press from some key places like PCMag, but
don't believe the drumbeat. Vista is excellent.

Yes, you can, though I have never tried it.
My Vista is in Spanish so I will guide you approximately with a translation.
Right Click on the Desktop, and choose "Customize" or whatever synonym you
have in English.
Click on "Windows Colours and Appearance" (translation may differ again)
In the next screen click on "Open the classic..."
Choose the colour combination you like to make it look like good ol' XP.

Yea, I think that might be the way to go. I've been reading thoughout the
discussion groups and that's how quite a few people seem to feel. Thanks!!!!

Carlos, it is called "Personalize" in English Vistaspeak. :)

And it is "Personalizar" in Spanish.
It was so close to "Personalize" that I chose "Customize".
:)

I think you'll find that gives you the appearance of W2K / W98 rather than
XP.

Jeff,
You are right.
That is what the preview window shows and that is what I think the OP is
looking for.
He is asking for "classic Windows look" and stating "I never liked the XP
look".

Yes Carlos, you are right. I like the W2K/W98 look.
I think I decided to purchase the Vista Business x64 version.
I just have to contact BenQ to find out what the issue(s) is/are for my
monitor.
I’d like to thank everyone for all your help.
I can’t wait to get this computer!!!

Hi,

Would it be better if I purchased the ESET Smart Security 64 bit version or
use the Vista firewall and ESET Nod32 64 bit version like you suggested.

Why is one better than the other?

Thanks!!!
