I have a standalone Windows 2003 server, currently using the default 2 TS
connections for access. However now had a request to enable an additional 5
concurrent connections.
How do I do this?

I assume that you are just using Remote Desktop for Administration
at the moment, which gives you 2 connections free of additional
licensing requiremenst. To get more connections, you have to
install Terminal Services, from Control Panel - Add/Remove programs
- Add Windows components.
You will also need to install the TS Licnesing Service (on the same
server or any other 2003 server in the domain), buy TS CALs and
install them on the TS Licensing Server.

Note that you will have to uninstall all presently installed
applications, then install TS and then re-install all applications
again. Reason for this is that your server need to be in install
mode when installing applications, to enable multi-user
capabilities. You will receive a warning about this when you
install the Terminal Services service.

Hi,

Just for clarification, I don't believe you get 2 'Terminal Server' CAL's
with Windows 2003. I think you may be confusing it with the fact that by
default Windows 2003 allows 2 users (normally Admins) to connect to it in
'Remote Administration Mode' to carry out Admin tasks (such as install
updates, add users etc).

This is different (although similar) to setting the server to Terminal
Services mode. To set the server to Terminal Server mode you need to:
a) Add the Terminal Server role by: Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs ->
Add/Remove Windows Component and then select Terminal Server
b) Within 90 or 120 days (I can never remember which) you also need to
enable the Terminal Server Licensing component if there isn't already one on
your network. Again this is done by: Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs ->
Add/Remove Windows Component and then select Terminal Server Licensing.

Have a read through this:

Contact your preferred IT supplier and ask to purchase the additional
'Terminal Server' CAL's (in your case 5). You simply need to decide whether
to go for User CAL's or Device CAL's (which ever fits your business better.

Hope this helps.
