Windows Vista My PC won't stay shut down!

Hi,

I have a brand new Dell desktop (got it Friday) with Vista Home Premium
32-bit SP1 on it. The problem I'm having is that I'm not able to shut the
computer off.

I'm going to the start menu, using the right arrow to display the full list
of options (sleep, change users, restart, etc) and selecting Shut Down. Vista
goes through the normal routine (shutting down, please wait, etc). After a
couple of seconds the fans and hard drives shut down in the CPU and my
monitor goes into sleep mode because it's not getting a signal. HOWEVER, in
another second or two, the fans and hard drives spin back up, just like I'd
pressed the power button on the CPU and the PC boots back up!

It was happening before I applied SP1, so that should not be the problem. I
can't say for sure that it has been happening from the very beginning, but I
think it has been. The first few times it happened I thought that maybe I had
put it in sleep mode by accident (I typically hit shut down and leave the
room before it's done). I haven't had time to reinstall any of my software
yet, so it is pretty much as delivered from Dell.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? And more importantly, does anyone
have any suggestions on fixing it? Right now the only way I can shut off my
PC is to catch it on the reboot and hold in the power button on the CPU until
it powers off.

If it's still under warranty, get Dell to take it back and give you a
new one.

You BIOS setup options might include a "Wake On LAN" S3 setting that would
do that.

Although your computer is booting up ok, it may still have hardware issues.
Take a look in Device Manager and see if there are any problems displayed.

While you are in Control Panel, click on 'Performance and Information' then
select 'Advanced tools'.

Now generate a system health report. Also take a look in the 'View advanced
system details ... '

Hi Frustrated,

See if this tutorial can help you. I would be sure to also check your
"Wake on ..." options to disable them in BIOS and for the Network (LAN)
device.

Aside from the wake-on-lan type of issue in the BIOS, if this is a brand-new
Dell, it comes with support that you should probably take advantage of.

This one turned out to be a BIOS setting. The Wake on LAN option was
disabled, but under Power Management the 'Remote Wake Up' and 'Auto Power On'
options were both enabled. I disabled them and the PC shuts down normally
now.

This is going to be a tough one to pin-point the exact cause of. There
is one way to determine if a likely cause is the true culprit. You
should do a system file refresh/reinstall. This is no where near as
daunting a task as seems. All you need to do is open a DOS command with
administrative privilages. Then type SFC /scannow exactly as shown. If
you have the install files, and you should because this is a new
computer, in a hidden partition then no more input from you will be
required. If you don't then you're going to need to put the install disk
into the DVD tray and change the directory to that one after you open
the DOS window. After this completes, it should take anywhere from 10
miniutes to 20 miniutes then your problem might be solved. If this
doesn't solve the problem then you're going to need to inspect your
power scheme settings. Lastly, it may be as simple as simple as your UPS
settings/software. Good luck!
