Help - My DVD Burner suddenly thinks it a CD only

Although I have burned many DVDs in the past, several days ago I developed a
problem. When I look at my drive with Windows Explorer, it shows up as a
DVD-RW drive. But when I put in a disk, it becomes a CD drive, and gives a
message that there is no disk in the drive. If I put in a CD, it reads and
opens correctly. The hardware configuration option under System shows the
drive correctly, and says it is working OK. I did a system restore without
any change.
Any Ideas?

Thanks in Advance

It's very possible the drive has gone bad and needs replacing.

Could be, but I don't think so. Just to check, I hooked up an external DVD
writer I borrowed. Same problem. Something's gone fishy inside XP, I think.
Or ... perhaps the Nero software has reset something ?

Re: Help - My DVD Burner suddenly thinks it a CD only

It is just the nature of the beast. My DVD/CD drive is the same
way. No problem...everything works just fine...after all they
are dual-purpose devices. Rest easy...relax.

Everything *doesn't* work just fine for the OP. Like he said, it won't
recognize a DVD.

Re: Help - My DVD Burner suddenly thinks it a CD only

These drives can be tricky at times. I find that switching tasks
back and forth from CDs to DVDs and/or DVDs to CDs can result
in strange behaviour at times, depending on the burning software
used. Maybe he has a bad drive for all I know. If so, a trip to
the local service shop is in order.

However, checking my empty drive will show it labelled as a DVD
drive but when any disk is inserted it reads that it is a CD
drive...but the DVD functionality has not changed.

Maybe this:
CD repair for XP:
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Re: Help - My DVD Burner suddenly thinks it a CD only

Now fixed. The full fix was to

a) uninstall the device (Control Panel > System > Device Manager)

b) edit the registry and remove the upperfilters/lowerfilters entires (See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060)

Reboot
