I put W2K on an older machine that had W98. The PC is a P3 and had a combo
3COM/USR PCI (56K DFVJ CPCI PC98) modem on it. It's part modem and part
sound card.

On System->Device Drivers->Modem I found a 3COM/USR 56K INT FAX and
installed it. When I rebooted, I got nowhere trying to dial out.
System->Device Drivers->Modem showed it was there, but not operable. I
uninstalled it and decided to install from the w2k install CD (drive F:)
there. The wizard got me to a point where I could specify the source of the
inf file. I gave it F:, but it couldn't find anything. There seem to be
about 50 and beyond inf files out there. How do I w2k device install wizard
to find anything remotely like it needs?

In the mean time, I'll look for a similar driver on the web.

Re: Installing a W98 Modem and Driver on W2K

I finally found the modem is a 3COM 56K Voice FAX. The Voice was a discovery
there, I had thought it was just FAX.

I installed the VOICE FAX from w2k with the Wizard and the simple list of
modems it presents, but the Phone&Modem Icon for show the modem is not
operable. Maybe it's just busted. My phone jack is a bit insecure in the
wall, maybe that has something to do with it? Somehow I doubt it.

Did you try:
http://www.usr.com/support/s-main-menu.asp

You may need to open up the computer and look for model numbers on the
card.
