Printing is unavailable after unstalling x64 sp2.

Hi All,

I am running Windows XP x64. I have two printers,
one is HP and the other is Epson. But, I have not be able
to use my printers after installing sp2. I've tried many things
to fix this problem. I have reinstalled the lastest
drivers, and I've also reinstalled Windows several times. But
the only way that works was to delete SP2.

I did according to the instruction, but it didn't help at all.
Is there any other things I can try?

There is no SP2 for XP x64 - can you give a link to the service pack you
downloaded?

You are WRONG. There is SP1 and SP2 for XP x64 but not SP0. You may go
to microsoft.com and check.

XP x64 is at the service pack 2 level, Vista x64 is at the service pack 1

XP Pro x64 shipped at service pack 1 because it shares system files with
Server 2003 and released at the time SP1 for Server 2003 released. The
first standalone service pack for XP Pro x64 is SP2.

Apologies to the OP.

I used my MSDN DVD collection as a source and there is neither an x64 SP2
nor an x64 iso with XP2 (although there is a Server 2003 iso with XP2,
should have been a clue). I wonder why it wasn't included in my MSDN
subscription. I'll have to decide whether or not to install it now I guess.

Correct. I asked MSDN about that six months ago and was told that there is
no plan to provide an XP Pro SP2 integrated .iso file. I used nLite running
on XP Pro x64 to create my own from my XP Pro x64 gold cd and the standalone
SP2 for IT Professionals on microsoft.com. Don't make the slipstreamed
image on anything but XP Pro x64, especially not on Vista.

Are there any events in the system event log?

Most HP and Epson printers use unidrv components

What are the versions of unidrvui.dll unidrv.dll and unires.dll? Ideally
they should all be the same.

Well, there is no special event log but an ordinary print error with
the event ID 6161.

And, in the path "C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3",
I could find unidrv.dll, unidrvui.dll, and unires.dll. They were all in the
same version, 0.3.3790.3959.

Well 6161 is the failure to print event. What is the error in the event?

2 is file not found

5 is access denied

6 is invalid handle

8 or 14 resource constraint.

And 0 is success!!

Most likely some resource allocation failed, GDI resets the last error to 0
and masked the real issue.

This fails to print all the time, correct? I assume other files than just
pdf.


After SP2 install, are the BUD files regenerated? (file size of BUD file in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3 is not 0).

Yes, every sort of files, not just pdf, fails to print. And, when I installed
SP2, I deleted all BUD files and let it be regenerated. And, in this time, I
found an interesting fact. While using my computer, I can't use printers and
all printing jobs remain uncompleted in the spool. But, when I restart my
computer, all the printing jobs in the spool are completed just at the moment
that Windows starts! That is, printer works just at the moment Windows starts.

Re: Printing is unavailable after unstalling x64 sp2.

That narrows this down.


This is still a resource issue. I am sure the jobs would print by stopping
the spooler service and starting the spooler service. The spooler does not
have a security token for the user on spooler restart so the job is
scheduled in the spooler security context.

make sure that the Windows\temp directory is writable by administrator. GDI
, this is the rendering component, will place spl.tmp files in this location
during the printing process.


It's unclear when you say you can't use printers. I assume you can use the
print queue but nothing every departs the machine.


How are the printers connected to the machine, USB, net?

Yes. What I meant by 'I can't use printer' was that every printing jobs
remain uncompleted in the queue. So, the printing queue works but it seems
that no data is transferred from the computer to the printers. And all
printers are connected to the net having their own IPs.

the first thing I would do is disable Bidirectional on the ports tab of the
printers.


Standard TCP/IP Port monitor?

How are the ports configured, LPR or RAW?


If you are using a network device that does not support SNMP and the port is
configured with SNMP enabled, SP2 for x64 will mark the device offline if it
does not get an SNMP response from the device.

If you are using an HP network card with the HP printer, SNMP is supported
by default.

also enabled. Then, how can I check whether my network device support SNMP or
not?

What network card are you using for the printers?

The card has to support SNMP and the printer itself has to send the SNMP
data to the nic on the printer.

If you are using a 3rd party print server device verify from the vendor that
it will send the SNMP info from the printer.

Since printing stopped, I'd say this is not supported

Change the ports such that SNMP is disabled. There can't be a print job
scheduled on the port.
