Windows Vista Black screen and mouse pointer after Vista resumes from sleep

I really can't understand why my vista pc wakes up the monitor when it
resumes from sleep due to a scheduled task in the task scheduler.
I expect logically that when Vista resumes form sleep due to a scheduled
task the monitor stays completely off, that is it remains in standby mode,
instead it turns on showing a black screen and the mouse pointer and the
worst thing is that, even if i set an idle time for the monitor to turn off,
it doesn't go to into sleep, that is if the scheduled task is running for one
hour the screen remains on with black screen and mouse pointer for one
hour!!!!
This is a serious matter.
I hope you can help me to solve this problem.

The same for me: Vista Ultimate 64/8GB RAM with ATI Radeon 2400 - no problem
with 4GB RAM.

No it isn't.

Just turn the monitor OFF with the power switch when
you're not using it.

Was that so hard?

Monitor power management has been unreliable clear
back to Windows 2000 and can't be relied upon in any case.

Away mode in Windows Vista is designed to use one's pc as a set top box.
I read the Microsoft document at address

and it's clearly written this: "When the PC wakes from Sleep due to a
hardware power button press, such as the sleep or power buttons, the display
is turned on and audio is un-muted. If the PC wakes from Sleep due to a timer
or WoL, the PC wakes but the screen remains off and audio remains muted."
In my case the screen turns on displaying a black image with the mouse
pointer instead of remaining off like the Microsoft document says.

It is obvious that i can turn off the monitor but i don't want to do it
every time , i want Windows handles this automatically since it's a feature.

Oh, my. Do you REALLY expect any Microsoft piece of software
to perform as they say it will with each and every set of the infinitely
variable hardware setups out there?

This feature is likely a broken one (no surprise there - this is Vista after
all),
or at least broken for the specific set of hardware you're running on.

OR MAYBE:

Microsoft's definition of "screen remains off" is just what
you are seeing. YOUR definition of "screen remains off" is actually
"screen in power saving or idle mode".

Why torment yourself with such an insignificant issue when a simple
finger-push will resolve it? Especially if you are "away" as your post
implies?

We are not talking about one of the thousand software houses, we are talking
about Microsoft, that is the third company in the world. They have tons of
well-payed engineers and if they write something i expect that that something
is well tested.
I may agree with you that between other things this is maybe not the most
important to fix but i consider it important.
I doubt that Microsoft's definition of "screen remains off" is to have the
mouse pointer shown on the screen for hours.
I am not the only one who has experimented this behaviour, if you make a
research in the forum you can find that this is bad for many Vista users.
I want to find a solution for this.

Actually, product from the "thousand software houses" is likely
to be better tested and have FEWER problems than stuff from
MS. They have more to lose from issuing buggy software
because they are small.

If this thing is important to you, I mean REALLY, REALLY important
to you, open up a paid support request (see the MS support page) with
them. You will get more attention than you will here in a peer-to-peer
environment. Since you already know that others users have the issue,
and that nobody seems to be able to solve it, go directly to the source.

I have the same problem but I do turn off the monitor - my questions is after
the scheduled task - why doesn't it go back to sleep as the power options
have it set to do?
