In the MS Press book for 70-291 it talks about an alternative to NetBIOS
based browsing. It says that you can "add network shares to the AD Global
Catalog Server".

It's an interesting idea but, how would one do that?

Re: Network Shares - Global Catalog - Browsing

In active directory users and computers, you would create a Shared Folder
object.

Huh, I never noticed that option before. I noticed you still have to setup
the Share and NTFS permissions the same way. So supposedly, if you add your
shared folders to AD this way, the network no longer needs WINS to browse
shares.
Have you tried this? Or has anyone else?
Does it work well? Are there any gotchas?
Seems like a good way to eliminate broadcast traffic on a network.
