XP 64. I have an HP deskjet 5940. The only drivers are beta drivers that
blue screen windows, so I use the deskjet 990 drivers to print to the
printer, which works well. In Device Manager I see Deskjet 5900 series, and
HPDeskjet 5900 series entries. I have them set to disabled (which doesn't
make any difference) About 5-10 times a day, the Found New Hardware Wizard
appears, wanting to help me install software for this printer. It doesn't
find it, and at the end I check the checkbox that says "Don't prompt me
again to install this software", but that doesn't stop it from coming back
again and again. How can I stop the Found New Hardware Wizard from appearing
again and again and again?

sounds lie kit may not be the printer it keeps finding.

have you tried to uninstall the printer you think is causing the problem.

Yup. remove it from device manager. Windows puts it right back and tries to install the "software" for the hardware.

Re: How to stop New hardware wizard from appearing all the time?

I can't help but think Mikey may have something there - if you have a multi-function printer and install a driver that gives you 'basic' printing, the OS must be expected to remind you that you have more functions available that are not yet enabled!

Furthermore, I wouldn't hesitate to use the HP driver (Beta, or not). HP drivers can be difficult in that you are expected to run the installer [before] you connect the hardware! I've used my PSC since the driver was in pre-Beta and it has been absolutely spotless all the of time.

Try removing the printer completely from device manager and turn it off and disconnect it from the PC, and re-boot twice (giving it a cold-boot at least once!).

Then run the installer and connect the printer when you are prompted to do so. The installer will detect for the hardware, and this may take a long - long, time. You might as well go for lunch during the while! (Really!) If you try and wait it out, you will certainly think it has crashed!

I am not familiar with your specific driver, but you might see something else as well, the HP installer sometimes will launch the MS installer right in the middle of whatever it is doing! This behavior is badly documented, but absolutely normal - if the Windows installer pops up unexpectedly, run it through and finish it off before continuing and finishing the HP installer!

If you miss out on any of those steps, your installation will not work! Later editions of the driver installation for my machine changed into something much more 'standard' but if you use the Beta driver, expect something 'other' - it should work perfectly in the end, though some of the functionality you may have to go through the 'Camera and Scanner' applet in Control Panel to access. (Seing it is the Beta Driver!)

As a further notice, make sure the messages aren't simply triggered by a card-reader on the printer!
