just found this guys amazing page, http://www.mdgx.com/wme.htm

it has a ton of information on all windows os and offers free updates even
for now "dead" Windows. Like this one here :

a ServicePack for ME which does improve both stability and speed :

direct download: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MESP1.EXE , english ME editions .

and a "hacked" XP MediaPlayer 10 (!) for 98SE and ME is to be found there
too among so much more.,

of course all this is not MS authorised and all total unsupported. But this
is a way to keep a ME machine a bit longer in use than MS had planned it for
us.

Note : the page is not my page and I am in no way involved. Enjoy it. The
downloads I did make from ther so far
were all virus free ( Avast 4.8 Home on ME ), so nothing to risk.

Greetings from germany

Note that nothing on that site is necessary to keep a PC using Win Me from
running perfectly well and without problems.

Nevertheless a wealth of information , pertaining to WinME. It amazes me
that someone took the time to gather it all in one place, making it
available for everyone, and do it for free.
A rare occurrence these days, but much appreciated, also for posting it
here.

Harry.

Just a note: I have had AXCEL216's site bookmarked since it was nothing but
DOS. I have never had a problem with anything I have used from any of his
sites....DOS (starting with 3.1), Me and XP. Many of his tips and tricks
have come in handy. I have him as a 'trusted' site. FWIW.
Heirloom, old and kinda miss DOS

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Does this file updates automatically to the end or it has to
be done in bits and pieces since there are .infs files?
I mean does it run like the MS one?

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

I downloaded the Win Me SP from the link that Sascha provided. Everything
is running well, except the Task Manager. Every time I /start/restart my
Win Me system I have an error that reads:

Error starting program: The C:\Windows\SstemKB918547\KB918547.EXE file
expects a newer version of Windows. Upgrade your Windows Version.

When I google KB918547 I can see that the miminum requirements are WIN 2000.
Is it possible to correct just this one file -- or do I have to uninstall
the Win ME SP?

Thank you,

Ed

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Back when KB918547 was released (June 2006) it did include Win Me however
there were initially a few reports of problems (confirmed by myself) when
trying to install this patch on a Win Me PC still running IE5.5 SP2. No
such problems were reported by those running IE6 or IE6 SP1. With Win Me
being out of extended support since July 2006 many KB articles no longer
mention Win Me and patches are no longer available for download other than
via the Windows Update site.

I have just checked using a clean install of Win Me and 918547 is still
being offered by the Windows Update site.

I haven't checked, but would very much hope that third party sites such as
the one mentioned by Sascha do at the very least offer the proper update
but then that's the risk one takes with the third party sites although I'd
be surprised if that was the case here given the long standing existence
of the site.

Thank you Mike for your prompt response! You are absolutely right. I did
download KB918547 from the Windows Update site (although I had all the
updates current). Then I deleted the KB918547 from the Unofficial Windows
Update SP & I'm no longer getting the message to update to a most current
version of Windows -- at system start up.
You are a gentleman and a scholar!
Best regards,
Ed

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Ed,

I'm pleased to read you've solved the problem. I'm nevertheless a little
intrigued as to why you had this problem when installing this (unofficial)
Win Me service pack. If I can find the time (and energy) I'll download
and try installing this SP on a Win Me system here to see what errors, if
any, that I get. If I manage to do this I'll post back my findings.

Cheers,

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Mike, Thank you. Your guess is as good as mine. The download and
the installation of the unofficial Win Me SP were clean & without any
system error messages. I only discovered the error message of
KB948547 when restarting the system, thus the reason of my post. On
a separate note, I have another situation that just happened & this is when
going into Safe Mode, the Help & Support Screen doesn't show up --
although when I click on Help it's there. Don't spend much time on
this, since you are busy with more important issues. Appreciate
your concern & response.

Mike, I didn't want to open another thread regarding the other
issue with the Help & Support screen that I mentioned in my previous post.
However, just wanted you to know that some 2 years back, Alan
Edwards helped me get back that Help & Support screen by
going into the Registry. I certainly have forgotten how we
fixed it, yet I'm quite sure you know how to resolve it.

Thank you again,
Ed

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Ed,

Lot's of possible reasons for problems with Help & Support. The most
recent was back in 2006 when users' installing the 911562 patch for
MDAC2.8 found they could no longer access Help & Support. The fix was to
download and install MDAC 2.8 SP1.

I have to admit to being less and less enthralled by this quite
unnecessary service pack which as far as I can see does little for those
running an already fully patched Win Me system.

I haven't a clue what those more important issues might be. Perhaps
watching the hour hand on the clock? <g>

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Mike,

You addressed it up front at the beginning of this thread -- that this
unofficial changes
wouldn't be necessary to properly run Win Me. (Yet curiosity killed a cat
like me).
Thanks for reminding me about the 911562 patch for MDAC2.8 -- I will go
ahead
and re-install it (note that PCHsetup from PCHealth Support was also altered
by the unofficial download & installation, thus the reason for *H & S* not
showing up.
I like your sense humor about your last line. I just wrote that to see your
reaction.
No offense.
Thanks again and cheers!

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Ed,

I'm planning to have a go with the "service pack" tomorrow. First with an
"out of the box" clean install of Win Me and the second on a fully patched
(to July 2006) system running IE6 SP1. The results might be interesting.

Now back to watching paint dry - it's going to take a hell of a long time
though as it hasn't made its way out of the can onto the brush yet! <vbg>

Cheers,

Re: found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :

Mike,

Boy, you've a job in your hands -- with the paint & paint brush -- that is.
I've done plenty of it & haven't really missed it.
Yes, it should be very interesting what results you find with the "service
pack."

I did follow your instructions on the 911562 patch & installation of
MDAC2.8 SP1 to fix it. No Help & Support screen showed up. There is
no rush on this, since I seldom need the "H & S" screen to show up.
Easy with that pain can for now!

Cheers!
