Vista Business here...

I can also D/L and play aything in Firefox, but IE won't play my own
mp3's or actually not even MP3's on musician's community sites. Not if
they are direct links; it WILL however play MP3's and videos thru
players such as soundclick.com player and Youtube etc.

But if I upload files on my own sites ('Crankenhaus home'
(http://www.crankenhaus.com), 'Antti 'DeeAa' Heikkinen'
(http://deeaa.pp.fi)) they only work on my Xp system AND Vista plus
Firefox, but IE just gives that exact error - cannot download the page,
diagnose connection problems etc.

SP1 and all possible patches installed; also made sure flash and java
and such are OK and also dropped IE security level way down, but to no
avail.

Hopefully someone will come up with a solution, I would hate to have to
forcibly use Firefox as my main browser.

p.s. the whole windows mediaplayer seems to have gone awol. There is
the the .exe but it won't start - won't give any error messages either,
though.

What happens when you D/L and play them in Firefox - what player are you
using to play them?

If Windows Media Player is broken, that would explain a lot. Do you get any
crash reports? What changed on the system before the player broke?

When you try to start the player, does it show up in Task Manager's Process
tab (as wmplayer.exe), or what exactly happens there?

VLC mediaplayer. That works fine.

It does seem mediaplayer doesn't work at all. I tried manually updating
it and it says it's the latest version etc. I never really even tried it
before - I just recently got this laptop, it came with Vista factory
setup, and I've basically just added Office and spent a week downloading
updates and getting around issues in Vista, such as buying new
accessories like printers and TV tuner USB stick because there were no
Vista drivers for those. Now it works very well, finally, except for the
mediaplayer.

So...there has been no significant changes in the system, I do believe
this may have been the first time I have ever attempted to use the
mediaplayer aside from I think I did launch it at some point and updated
it as per windows suggestions. I have enabled automatic updates and it
seemed to me at some point it would do little else than d/l updates
constantly, but after about a week it got 'em up to date and now the
error messages in Vista are indeed way more rare. I still get a
'Phoenix' something crashing whenever I wake up from sleep but it
doesn't seem to affect anything much.

Lemme try to launch wmplayer...well I'll be damned. Now it seems to
work just fine! Very strange. Well I just rebooted, so that may explain
it.

The www media links still won't work, though. If I download the file on
the link to desktop, wmplayer will play it fine...but directly clicking
a link to an mp3 or any media file will still just say 'iexplore cannot
display that webpqage'.

So it must be an IE setting/problem after all?!?

Gotcha.

How did you install the VLC player?

IE does a validation check on the local system file association - it would
appear that the WMP association may be broken in part currently. If you go
to the Default Programs control panel and reassociate to WMP there, that
*should* fix it up.
