I copied many pages of a PDF. file at it says it saves it in my clipboard. I
noticed that even after I close the file it still stays in the clipboard at
uses up memory. Why does this happen, and how can I clear it manually?

A block of memory is used for the clipboard. It doesn't matter what is in
it, no additional memory is being used. "Clearing" it wouldn't give you a
single byte more of available RAM.

That would imply that the amount of data you can put into the clipboard is
limited. Would you happen to know how large the reserved chunk of memory is?

Are you sure about that, dadiOH? My understanding is that a very large file or a
very large amount of copied data on the clipboard would use a lot more memory than a
copy of a single word.

Using Clipboard Viewer. Optionally, you can simply highlight and copy a
small bit of text. One source of small bits of text on your desktop are the
filenames. Click once, press Ctrl-C, then click somewhere else.

Whatever you copy to the clipboard stays there until you copy
something else. So to get rid of this stuff, bring up a text file (or
something) and copy just a tiny bit of it.

I think I have besides the clipboard problem, a problem that my memory does
not clear up fast, because when I do work that uses a lot of memory even
after I will close some I will have freezing problems.

I spent twenty minutes searching Google and Microsoft.com. Simply reading
that stuff clearly implied that dadiOH is wrong. My message to him was a
challenge to show evidence for what he suggests, since on the face of it,
and based upon personal experience, it makes no sense.

normal amount of background apps like antivirus, etc.

You've received a number of replies on how to clear the clipboard. The easiest way
for me is to use this tiny utility....I have used it since I was using Win95,
through Win98, and still use it on WinXP:

ClipClear 3.2.0 is a tiny proggie that just clears your clipboard contents -

One thing is obvious, however (and this may be what you're getting at):
If you copy something to the clipboard, it IS using RAM to store it for
immediate access

If you want to (or feel compulsed to) free up that RAM, you can always do
what was already mentioned: i.e, just copy a bit of text, and that will
overwrite what was in there before, OR use the clear clipboard utility
mentioned by Glen. But you really don't need to this all that often, in
practice, from what I've seen. :-)

What makes you say that? Not obvious to me at all. In fact, the opposite. I
see no reason or documentation that the Clipboard has any higher priority
than most stuff in memory and should be able to be swapped out with no
problem.

Not a clue. In fact, I've changed my mind about there being a clipboard
buffer (which could have been dynamic and/or virtual, BTW)...

1. I had 303 MB free.
2. I copied a 155 MB folder
3. I still had 303 MB free RAM
4. I copied a 1 KB file
5. I still had 303 MB free RAM.

That - and the rapidity with which something large is copied - leads me to
the thought that *nothing* is actually copied when copying files or
folders...that Windows merely sets up pointers *to* the object. That seems
to be confirmed by Start-Run-clipbrd.

That is sensible, IMO, for stuff that is on (integral to) the computer. It
could also work for copies from the web by keeping that material in a temp
folder as a file and pointing to it but that doesn't seem to be the case as
the clipboard viewer spits out the copied material rather than a file/folder
path. The same is true for data on the computer that is not a file or
folder.

Anyway, the relatively inconsequential amount of RAM consumed by something
put on the clipboard is not something I think people need worry about nor
that I think would degrade performance. Do you?

What is ClipClear?
==================

ClipClear is a tiny free utility that allows you to clear the contents of
the Windows clipboard with a click of the mouse. ClipClear places a
little clipboard icon into tray area. If there is something in the
clipboard, you'll see red cross over the icon. That means that by
clicking on this icon you can clear the contents of the clipboard. That
easy!
Right-clicking the icon brings up a little popup menu with some commands
for launcing Windows Clipboard Viewer etc.
If you manage to copy large images and data over the clipboard now and
again then you may find this utility useful.

Also, there are some command line switches that change behaviour of the
program:

/CLEAR By including this switch on command line, ClipClear will clear
the clipboard when it starts up. After that it will be running in the
system tray area.
/EXIT This switch is used along with the /CLEAR switch. It just
instructs the program to exit after clearing the clipboard. By using both
/CLEAR and /EXIT switches, you can use the program just to clear the
clipboard, it will not remain running in the system tray. For example you
can make a shortcut to the program in your QuickLaunch area of the system
taskbar (including these switches), then, when you want to clear the
clipboard just click the shortcut and you are done. Useful when you want
to use the program occassinally. It does not consume system resources
that way and gives you more room in the tray area for other applications.


Installation
============

Unzip files into a directory of your choice and make shortcut to the
ClipClear.exe into your StartUp group, so ClipClear will automatically
start each time you start Windows. To remove it from your system, you
just need to delete the files - there is no settings in the registry or
in another folders.


Digitally Signed
================

The executable file included is digitally signed. If you have received
the file that has an invalid or missing digital signature please contact
us. You can see Digital Signatures tab when you invoke file properties
window of a digitally signed file.
