windows XP pro (SP2) not recognizing 750gb hdd? (lil help please?)

Hi all,

New here, searched a bit, no on-point posts to be had ... otherwise
simple question:

I'm running Win XP Pro (sp2) on a basic 250gb western digital drive.
Had no problems. It's connected via SATA (SATA power as well).
Yesterday I plugged in a second hard drive, a 750gb Samsung. SATA
drive w/ SATA power.

BIOS sees both hard drives.

Device Manager shows 2 hard drives. Windows explorer doesn't ("my
computer") show the newer drive, the 750.

I can uninstall the 750 from device manager, reboot, and let windows
install, but i still can't actually see the drive and work with it. I
was hoping to be able to at least see it and format it and then use
it.

What can i do to get into the new drive?

Could power be an issue? Should it have its own connection to the psu,
or could it be choked for power (i'm in the process of upgrading my
psu to support more fans).

I understand older processors had limits to the sizes of hard drives
they could read, but my processor is rather new.

Have you partitioned the new drive and formatted the partition(s)?

To format a new drive go to Disk Management on your Windows PC,
1) Right click on the My Computer icon.
2) Select the Manage option,
3) In the Computer Management window select Disk Management.

Hi c,

Older processors had limits of hard drives?

Click Start, Run, type diskmgmt.msc and click OK. Do you see both
there? If so, format the new drive and see if you now see it in Explorer.

If not, check your BIOS settings closer. I know the drives are not
identical, but there may be some setting preventing them acting
independently.

no, i can't access the drive to perform a format, and i have not
partitioned (due to the same reason)
