Setting up to test apps using TS

I’d like to set up Terminal Services (TS) in order to run my Access app, and
MS Word/Excel. I would like to test this out first, and become familiar with
it, before I actually install Server 2003 or 2005. Would appreciate it if
someone could get me started by answering a few basic questions.

I understand MS provides virtual server 2003 or 2005 to conduct such testing
in those environments without the need to purchase server 2003/2005 for
testing. Is that correct?

Next, I am unclear on just how virtual servers work. If I were installing
an actual version of Server2003, for example, I would partition the hd. As I
understand it, with a virtual server, I will not need to partition my hd to
add the server OS. Is that correct?

Without a separate partition, I am unclear how you boot up the server OS to
start testing. Do you just run it from an icon on the desktop?

Once I am up and running this virtual server, do I install Word, Excel,
Access onto the server, or will I use the existing installations on the
machine before I installed Virtual Server? That is, is Virtual Server now
running in it’s own “partition” independent of the XP Pro machine on which I
downloaded it, and so will I need to install these apps onto the virtual
server in order to setup/use TS?

I believe once I get past these basic questions, I should then be able to
follow whatever help there is with the virtual server in order to get TS up
and working on this server. But if you have any other advice, I would be
most grateful.

I very much appreciate any help on some answers.

Thanks,
Mark

Virtual server 2005 sp1 is the actual version. You can download it for free.

It works like an application and looks more or less like working on real
hardware. You will do any partitioning, creating etc. filebased WITHOUT doing
anything on your physical disk. Just make sure you have diskspace and RAM/preocessor
power.

If VS is installed, you have an admin console via Internet explorer for managing.
Here you create, start, configure, delete your machines and can do anything
you like.

If VS is installed you have to built a server/workstation operating system
first, like you have real hardware. On this machine you can install Word/Excel
or whatever.

Re: Setting up to test apps using TS

Thanks, this gives me a great start.

This will sound like a silly question, but... so is Virtual server 2005 just
a testing environment, or is it an actual working server operating system
that people use to run a network?

Got lots of other questions, but they will probably get answers as I get
down and start setting things up.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Setting up to test apps using TS

Hello Markus,

Both. It will be used for production environment and testing. But you still
have to have the licenses ofcourse for any installed OS.
