Selectively Redirect Printers

I have done some searching on this topic, but have come up
empty. Is there a way to selectively redirect a client's printers?
So, the client has printers A, B and C, but I only want to redirect
printers B and C. And, yes, I do know about the FilterQueueType
registry setting, but the problem is that both printers A and C are
USB.

The actual reason for me wanting to do this, is that printer A
causes the session to hang when I try to logoff. So my reasoning is
that if this printer is not redirected, the session will no longer
hang when I logoff.

If anyone has ideas concerning either of these, it would be most
appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Selectively Redirect Printers

I'm guessing it's the driver that's the issue. you can simply tell windows
to not use that driver but a friendly one. if you are using Windows 2003,
you can remove the native driver from the server and then use the Fall Back
drivers which are friendly as well. you could also use a 3rd party print
solution like Provision Networks Print-IT solution to control this as well
(I am a PN employee for full disclosure)

I have tried various other drivers to no avail. What do you mean by
the "Fall Back drivers?" I have never heard of these. Thanks.

Re: Selectively Redirect Printers

Within Group Policy under Computer/Config/Admin Templates/Windows
Components/Terminal Services/Client/Server data redirection youc an set the
use of the FallBack driver. SP2 or higher is required.

Also what type of printer is it? What type of drivers have you tried? Are
they native windows drivers (from the CD)? the CD drivers are the best to
use if possible. Vendor drivers tend to be bad.

Jeff,

The printer in question is a "HP LaserJet P1006" usb printer.
I'm a bit confused about enabling the fallback printer driver. The
printer is being detected by the server and redirected. According to
the blurb about the fallback printer driver, it seems that it would
only be applicable if the printer was NOT being redirected. As for
printer drivers, I cannot even think of how many I have tried.
Currently, I am using a driver downloaded directly from HP's website.
It is the most current driver for this unit. I have also tried HP's
universal printer driver. I am uncertain what other drivers I may
have tried. Thanks for the help.

Vincent

Re: Selectively Redirect Printers

To use the fallback driver simply delete the server side drivers for that
printer. If the driver does not exist on the server for that printer, the
fallback driver will be used.

Also i would stay away from any 3rd party driver and stick with basic
windows cd drivers.
