When I try to install certain software (games) from a CD, I get a message
saying some installation support files are missing. If I copy the entire CD
to a new folder on the hard drive and install from there, it works fine.
Anyone know what files are missing? Thanks..

Re: Missing support files

Sounds to me like your CD drive is just too slow and/or dirty and that when
setup tries to read the file(s) from the CD, it fails to read the file(s)
before timing out and throwing the error, but when it reads them from the
HD, no problem. I see that a lot. I don't know why the files can be read to
HD successfully if they can't be read fast enough for setup, but when simply
copying files Explorer seems to be more insistent about getting the file,
maybe it has more tricks.

Re: Missing support files

Gary,

I believe the CD drive may be too slow to un-compress the Cab files
during an install, so in that case it misses some files. As you say
copying usually works because the Cab files are simply copied.

Now THAT makes sense.

Re: Missing support files

Well, I suppose that's a place to start. I think it's a 24x, but may be
suffering from old age too. I might try copying the CD to a jump drive and
then see if it will load from the jump. If so, I guess that will prove the CD
drive to be the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Missing support files

Copying the Win 98 folder on the CD to a Win 98 folder on the HD and
then installing from the HD means that anytime Windows needs
something from the CD it will go to the Win 98 folder on the HD for
it instead. Only the Win 98 folder needs to be copied, not the
entire CD. Install into C:\Windows.

I suppose that's what you did.

That's what I do and it works well.

Disregard my post, you were referring to games not the OS. :-(
However the same principle usually applies.

Re: Missing support files

You can leave out the sub-folders, too. All you need are the files.

Re: Missing support files

Here's where I am.....I copied the CD to a flash drive. I can load the
program from the flash drive, so assume you are correct in thinking the CD
drive is faulty. I ran a Nero speed test on the drive (24x) and it comes up
at about 10x. I also ran the test on another machine and it came up slower,
but I can load the CD on it. Before I buy another drive (unfortunately not a
standard size, Dell SFF) I am wondering if this is related to spin-up speed
rather than running speed? Any opinion on that? Thanks..

I'd copy all the files to your HD once again and time the transfer.
Then calculate your system's transfer rate in KB/s and divide by 150
KB/s. This should give you an average speed rating. A speed of 10X
would be about 1.5 MB/s. Depending on the age of your hardware, this
may reflect the limits of your motherboard's IDE controller rather
than your CDROM drive.

Re: Missing support files

In addition to the others:

It may also relate to the buffer memory installed ON the CDROM drive. The
issue normally crops up when burning a disk, but is also found when
copying/installing, i.e., CD intensive usage. A minor "fluctuation" in DMA,
CPU, system memory and/or other during the process and the drive may seem to
or actually fail during the activity.

CDROM caching software and settings were the "one time" suggested solution.
