64 Bit compatability issue

I know my processor is 64-bit capable But I don't know about the other
hardware, and all I get from the manufacturer is a run around. Is there some
sort of test software I can download from Microsoft that will let me know if
Ultimate (64-bit) will run? I currently have Home Premium (32-bit) but need
the access to over 3.5GB RAM that the 64-bit would provide... and figured,
since I'm upgrading... may as well go for Ultimate at the same time.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

The simple answer is are there drivers for your hardware? If you don't have
drivers, you're probably not going to be happy. And drivers are really the
responsibility of the hardware mfg. Since you don't give us any information
about your computer, it's really hard to provide any more details.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

Dell Inspiron 530, Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @2.40GHz
What else do you need to know?
I read on newegg.com, In "customer ratings" where one customer supposedly
ran something that Microsoft provided before he upgraded that told him his
system could handle 64-bit. Is there such a program? If not I'd appreciate it
if you could tell me what I need to hunt down in my device manager that will
help you answer my question.

Thanks!

Please give some specifics about your computer. Make, model, etc.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

You need to contact Dell about 64-bit drivers. Just going
to the Dell Support web site there is no indication they are
supplying 64-bit drivers. They only list 32-bit XP & Vista.

If you can't find the necessary 64-bit drivers, you will
have to look at alternate solutions.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

Hi,
This freeware utility
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
can give you a comprehensive list of all the hardware inside your PC.
You will need to search drivers, mainly, for your motherboard (see mobo's
mfgr website), video & sound cards, network card, etc.
Do your homework, assemble the package of drivers, and then go for it!
Do a FULL backup of your current status so that you can go back in case
something goes wrong.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

So, does Dell offer drivers for the hardware that is in your Inspiron? Can
you buy that model with Vista 64-bit? If the answer to either of those is
yes, you should be in good shape. If the answer to both is no, then you're
out of luck and please contact Dell Support to discuss your need for 64-bit
drivers.

There's no magic here - the drivers come from the OEMs. In some cases there
might be an alternative, but in my experience with Dell machines, everything
inside them is just proprietary enough to make them your sole source for
drivers. One of the reasons I don't buy Dell any more, actually.

Re: 64 Bit compatability issue

With the Inspiron 530 the short answer is no it doesnt support 64bit. At
least thats in the sense that Dell themselves don't provide drivers for it.
That said Dell did release a bios update to that I believe was to support
over 4GB ram.

Quoting Dell downloads page for Inspiron 530: BIOS revision 1.0.12 Changelog
Systems: Dell Insprion 530/530s
Version: 1.0.12
Build Date: 03/01/2008
Fixes/Enhancements:
1. Add support for new Intel CPU.
2. Update to latest microcodes.
3. Improve POST time with internal USB Card Reader & Buffalo USB HDD
combination.
4. Correct Memory Map for => 4GB configurations.

You would also need to find the drivers for all the components yourself
because as Dell doesnt support Vista 64 on this model they arent listed on
the website. This guide may help
http://outerheaven.c-reality.com/archives/96-Dell-Inspiron-530-Windows-Vista-64-bit-Driver-Pack.html,
but I have not tried it and cannot confirm that it works. If this is a brand
new computer I would consider using Dells 30 day return policy and
exchanging for an XPS420 that I believe does support Vista 64, the XPS420
driver page may be usefull for Inspiron 530 drivers if they share the same
hardware.

Sorry about the rambling post, but if you do decide to try and install Vista
64 please post back and let us know how you got on.
