Hi all,

I get the feeling this is fairly straight forward to resolve (he thought
hopefully) - anyway i have a Windows 2003 machine acting as a TS, i have
installed sometime ago, 20 licenses for it, it continued to issue the
temporary ones, until today, some expired, yet it refuses to issue one of the
full cals

TS License manager displays this:

Product Type
Total Available Used
Existing Windows 2000 Server - Terminal Server Built in Unlimited
Unlimited 0
Temporary Licenses for Windows Server 2003 Temporary - -
24
Windows Server 2003 - TS Per User CAL Open 20
20 0

So how do i get it to start using the official cals?

Thanks

Re: HELP!! TS Not issuing the perminent licenses...!

You have installed Per User TS CALs, and by default, your Terminal
Server is configured in the Per Device licensing mode. So you have
to change it to the Per User licensing mode, in Terminal Services
Configuration - Server settings.

Note that in Windows 2003, Per User licenses are unmanaged. This
means that even after you have switched the licensing mode on the
TS, your User CALs count will not be decremented. But the Licensing
Server will stop issueing temporary Per Device licenses, and your
users will be allowed to connect. It is your responsibility to have
a valid User CAL for every user that uses the Terminal Server.
This is documented here:

2003

Hi Vera, thanks for your reply, we switched it to per user earlier today, but
it doesnt seemed to have made any difference.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: HELP!! TS Not issuing the perminent licenses...!

That's weird!
Can you do some testing:
1. connect with a client which has never connected before. The TS
LS should not issue a temporary license.
2. Remove the locally stored license from a client which cannot
connect (but its temporary license has expired). Again, the LS
should not issue a new temporary license, and the client should be
able to connect.

Can you report the result of the above tests?

Re: HELP!! TS Not issuing the perminent licenses...!

Hi Vera,

Thanks for your answer/suggestions - it seemed to resolve itself in the end,
i guess i just never gave it enough time from switching the license type, the
users at the other site didnt pester me for the rest of the day, so i left it
alone, the next day, the temp licenses went down and users were able to
connect to the TS...its probably the cranky domain i have here, lol

Thanks again for your help in times of need.

Kind Regards

Jed
