Vista is constantly nagging me to install the cumulative update for Media
Center for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB950126), but it fails with
this error code every time.

I've tried installing the usual way by just downloading and installing
through Windows Update, and I've tried downloading and launching the
standalone .msu file both with same results.

What's gives? How can I get past this?

Here's an excerpt from the WindowsUpdate.log:

Also, if it matters, I booted into diagnostic mode and ran chkdsk on the C

Would appreciate some knowledgeable help, thanks.

RE: Windows Update Error Code 80070020

Oh, I should also mention that I am not running any security products when I
attempt the update, since that seems to be one of the common suggestions wrt.
this particular error code.

Re: Windows Update Error Code 80070020

Are you running Vista or Vista SP1

What anti-virus application or security suite is *installed* (not
necessarily "running")? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Error message when you try to download an update from Windows Update or from
Microsoft Update in Windows XP or Windows Vista: "0x80070020 The process
cannot access the file because it is being used by another process":

Hi PA Bear, thanks for the response...

Vista SP1.

Actually none. There has never been a third-party security product
installed on this system, including AV, anti-spyware, or firewalls. The
system was installed fresh last year from an authentic off-the-shelf Vista
CD, so there is not even any preloaded vendor trial security software
installed.

The system does run World of Warcraft which has a spyware-like thing called
"Warden". That was not running when the update was attempted.

If this is useful to know, all other updates before and after that one have
succeeded, and all programs and applications on the system are functioning
normally.

Is there a way to find out which other process is accessing the file? I've
tried shutting down every nonessential program, daemon, and service that I
can think of to do the update, but no luck so far.

Would appreciate some insight.

Your cavalier attitude towards security may have landed you in this
situation, I'm afraid.

If you find no joy in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825 and MS support
can't assist you (see below), the machine may be compromised by an untold
number of infections, so it might be best to format & reinstall...

....then get & keep that machine fully protected.

Good luck!

Re: Windows Update Error Code 80070020

I don't think that would be the problem either, I just received my computer
about 2 nights ago, tried installing the updates before I surfed the web,
installed ANY programs and I got the same message, it's quite aggravating
when you pull a new computer out of the box and start having issues from day
1 although I can't blame the company I bought it from cause it's probably a
software issue somewhere. Good luck in finding an answer to this cause its
driving me batty.
