Hi
I posted a few days ago about a problem with SBS2003 fresh install locking
up during server tools setup on Internet Explorer 6.0 installtion. I had a
reply saying it was probably due to an active internet connection. Since
this i have installed a brand new harddrive and pulled the plug on the
router while attempting the setup. Again the initial part of the setup is
fine, its when it gets to the actual server configuration. Its gets as far
as installing server tools, the message says its doing internet explorer
6.0. Ive left it at this point for several hours and it gets no futher. A
look in the process list shows the setup process is just eating more and
more memory. After a few hours it was up past 1gb of memory.

I searched the harddrive for what was growing as i was also loosing
harddrive space during this point. It turned out it was a log file
(eventlog.txt) it keeps adding the same lines over and over again - these
are

[07/04/08,09:37:38] Setup.exe: GetCustomProperties()
[07/04/08,09:37:38] Setup.exe: get_CustomProperties()

Ive got lots more logs, but i cant attach them as the message is too big
then. The only other thing that mmight be of use was the errorlog.txt -
this has the following in

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

What are the specs for the server? (mfg/model of Motherboard, RAID, amount
of RAM, type of disks [EIDE, SCIS, SATA], hard drive size, etc.)

You siad you unplugged the router. Did you then connect one NIC into the
router and the other NIC into a live (powered on) switch/hub that did not
have any other devices connected to it?

Are you using an internal CDROM for the SBS install?

Does the SBS Setup complete if you go to Add/Remove programs and select the
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 item?

Can you make a copy of the CD1 and CD3 using a CDRW drive? (i.e., can the
entire contents of the CDs be read in another machine; I'm thinking a CD
problem here).

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

Hi, Thanks for you reply. Its a Dell Poweredge server, 1GB Ram 2x 250gb
SATA Harddrives on a software RAID. I havent got the rest of the details to
hand at the moment. It is an internal CDROM, IDE. THe machine has 2 x NIC.
One is connected to a live HUB and 1 is connected to the live ADSL router.
Neither have any other device connected.

Ive made a copy of CD3 onto a harddrive as i suspected this was the problem
as its on cd 3 the error occurs. I can try and copy CD 1 as well to make
sure. I havent tried using add/remove programs, i was forced to shut the
server down with this problem and as such when i swithc on i tried to re-run
'continue setup' icon but it fails (i cant remmeber the exact message).

Many Thanks

Adrian

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

Hi Adrian,

Reformat both drives so they are back to "Basic" instead of "Dynamic". Now
unplug the secondary disk. Then reinstall SBS on the primary disk starting
with CD1. When the base Windows 2003 server is installed, configure your
partitions (if necessary) and the external NIC settings. Do not make the
disks dynamic yet. Now continue with the SBS component install. When
finished, run CEICW to set up the SBS components and make sure all is well.
Assuming everything completes properly, you can then shut down, re-connect
the secondary drive, boot and make the disks dynamic. Then mirror them.

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

One gig of ram is really about 1/4 of what I like to see in a server.
At least 2 gigs in a SBS but we deliver with 4 gigs now.

Hub is a performance issue. I know you can buy hubs at Walmart but you
really should have a 100mb switch or faster. Heck even a 10 mb switch
would work better than a hub but you are not at the point of slow
network performance yet. Note a hub and lack of ram will cause
performance issues when you go production. Lack of ram will cause the
install to go slower.

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

Sorry - should have said Switch - its a 1000 switch. I intend to increase
the ram in the server shortly as this does indeed give performance issues.
This is a small network - only 3 pc's though.

Re: Installation locks up eating memory

OK to confirm, I have taken this back to a single 250gb (new low level
formatted) disk - i havent done the raid yet as i wait until sbs is fully
installed before doing this. It is when i continue with the SBS component
install that this problem occurs.

What is the make/model of server?
If generic server, what make/model of motherboard?

RE: Installation locks up eating memory

I am receiving the exact same problem as reported here a few weeks ago, and I
could not see that an answer was provided.
In my case this is a new SBS2003 SP1 installation on a new HP ML110 server
with two U320 SCSI 72GB disks (2.5GB RAM).

There is no error message on the screen, the process just seems to have
hung. But, for two hours now, the eventlog.txt has been recording
Setup.exe:GetcustomProperties, while the errorlog.txt recorded the message
noted by Adrian Brown :"Client Deployment: [2] Failed to set DACL to
C:\ClientApps[1] at the same time as the eventlog.txt started recording the
other message.

Mine is still stuck at the installing Internet Explorer 6 with CD3 in the
drive. Does anybody have an idea how to get around this?
