I am running Windows 2003 Small Business Server SP1 on a standard HP proliant
server.
I have created an ASR backup set using a USB hard drive and a standard floppy.
The ASR backup completed normally and I can see the 2 SIF files and the
setup log on the ASR floppy. The floppy was preformatted using the same
machine and has a data volume label of ASR.
I ran a test restore to validate the ASR backup. At the point where ASR
requires the floppy, I inserted the disk and pressed a key to continue.
However the ASR routine continued to request that I insert the floppy disk
and seemed unable to detect the disk. This issue has been repeated several
times and thru several new ASR backups.
I have checked that the floppy is enabled at boot up in the BIOS and have
also proved that the boot process can detect the floppy drive by attempting
to boot from the floppy; as expected the boot failed to find NTLDR on the
floppy and stopped. On removing the disk and restarting the server boots
normally to Windows 2003.
As the disk appears to be available at bootup and can be accessed normally
under windows I think I have eliminated the possibility of a hardware or
media failure.
However I am unable to think of any other reason why ASR would fail to
recognise the ASR floppy as part of the backup set.
Any ideas or further diagnostic suggestions gratefully received.
