Hi guys. Ive had my computer for almost a year with no problems. Last
night it had its first. I turn the computer on and the monitor works
fine, i can see the start up process but right when the globe for vista
should show the screen goes black and then says "no signal" and never
comes back on. I can still hear vista loading though but it never comes
back onto the screen. When i started the computer in safe mode i was
able to load vista. I ran a virus check that found nothing. This
morning i did a system restore and now i cannot even get windows to load
in safe mode. When i try to load it normally the screen goes black.
when i try to load into safe mode the screen goes black by i an see and
move the mouse cursor. Any ideas? I tryed to see if i had a start up
repair option by hitting F8 but all it did was ask me to pick the drive
to boot to first. I have a recovery disk from the manufacturer. should
i use this? Will it erase everything on the hard drive? I do not want
to lose my photos or music. Any ideas guys? This is my system specs:

Dual Core Pentium 3G
Asus P5N-E mother board
2 G Ram
NVidia Geforce GTX 768 MB graphics card
Soundblaster sound card
500 GB hard drive
DVD Drive
DVD/RW Drive

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

This could be a power supply problem, particularly if you have an 8800 that
requires its own power connector. That would be my first 5 guesses.
If your computer is a year old and you are running with the power supply
that came with the case it is about time for a melt-down.
If you end up getting a new power supply get a name brand, e.g. Cooler
Master or Antec or OCZ (there are others) that is at least 600 watts. For
upper end NVidia cards 650 watts is a good minimum and some recent ATI cards
need even more watts.
This sounds like a hard ware problem. It is not likely your motherboard,
videocard or hard drive. You can see if you can run the Microsoft memory
tester as this usually rapidly identifies bad ram.
Before considering a Windows reinstall that will trash your hard drive, and
from what you write sounds pointless, see if you can plug your hard drive
into another computer and off load whatever files you need.

The cable in the back came loose.

Your pet ****er spaniel chewed it up.

The cable in the back has failed.

The monitor has failed.

The video card has failed.

The operating system is attempting to display a mode the monitor
cannot. (This is where the "safe mode" thing will help.)

You have been rude to an old Gypsy woman, who has cursed you
with the Bane of the Black Monitor. You must now find her again and
apologize by gifting her with fine silk and bottles of arak.

I have just recently started seeing the same problem and have not been able
to find a solution. However I have found that if I do a ctrl-alt-del and
when the screen shows up I select "log off". Shortly after that I get the
option to log back in and it goes into windows immediately.

Don't know what is causing the problem, however this "might" get you back
into windows.

Re: Screen goes black when Vista 32bit loads....

Had the same problem connecting the DATA (RGB cable) of monitor while
windows was coming up exactly after the vista logo (or globe or whatever it
is) and before the logon screen (how could i know that it was at that stage
while connecting RGB cable? good questions that i will answer it in the end;
anyway)

Nothing could help ; it was long ago and i dont remmber the exact solution
that helped but its was surely one these
1- going to safe mode change the resolution of screen to the lowest
possible; restart in the normal mode got my screen back then I could set the
resolution to what i wanted ( probably this was how i got rid of black
screen)

2- (very unlikely that i had done this but) uninstalling and reinstalling
video card driver.

yu can imagine how hard it is to login and change resoltion or reinstalling
driver (in blind black screen)

how could i know that it was at that stage while connecting RGB cable?

by sound card playing that sound while showing the GLOBE and my HDD activity
that i am familiar with :)
