Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

I didn't bother reading through this long post but do you have Zone Alarm
installed and did you install the latest Microsoft Updates.
If you did the fix is to update Zone Alarm to the latest version.

Have you recently installed MS updates, and if so did you do KB951748
and if so do you run ZoneAlarm Firewall?

This seems to be this weeks problem child, that's why I ask.

Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

Thanks, Joan and Big_Al.
The answer is yes, on one PC. But on the problem PC, since I can't access
the Internet, I can't even do the updates you mention! Do you know any way
around this vicious circle?

Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

problems are long fixed with security update & ZA in ZoneAlarms latest
update... all releases covered, from basic to the full suite

either uninstall security update KB951748 or simply lower ZoneAlarms
firewall to medium to allow you to regain access to the net on affected pv,
then...

Follow the link below, download new update version of ZA 70.483.000, and
then download the security update KB 951748 afterwards.
I have done all pc's on my home network... all back to normal....

Exit Zone Alarm. Long enough to download the new version.

Turn on the Windows firewall and uninstall ZA. Then you'll be able to
download and install the new version of ZA.

Or just turn on the Windows firewall and uninstall ZA, and leave it
that way. ZA doesn't really have any advantages over the Windows
firewall anyway.

Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

1. Uninstall KB951748 via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Upgrade your ZA application using the appropriate link here:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

NB: Do NOT use Option #2 if at all possible! The vulnerability addressed by
KB951748 *is* a big deal! See
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/07/patch_the_entire_internet_tues_1.html

3. Reinstall KB951748.

Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

Thank you, Ken, Charles and Big_Al, for your help, not only in solving the
immediate problem, but in giving me a better understanding of the principles
of firewalling.
I've now permanently removed ZoneAlarm and changed back to Windows Firewall.
Let's see how it goes!

Re: Network/Internet connection has stopped working

Thanks, Robear, for these very interesting websites.

I notice that while the affected PC (XP Home SP2) was updated by KB951748,
my own PC (XP Pro SP2) was not, and a check on MS Update doesn't suggest it.
I presume that it only applies to XP Home.
