The OS is Windows 2008. I attempted to restore the backup on to a new
hard drive and got error messages as follows:

Windows Complete Restore failed.
Error details: Element not found(0x80070490)

I looked in Technet website for a solution but could not find any.
Could anyone help me?

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Hello churin,

Please describe more details, what kind of backup, data or system state or
full computer backup? Domain controller, member or workgroup server?

Best regards

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Thank you for your response.
I am using Windows 2008 as a workstation OS(its settings are modified
for this purpose) and created its system backup or a backup of the C:
drive partition. The restore process was initiated by booting from the
OS setup DVD but ended with that error message.

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Hi, Meinolf,

The new hard drive is the same brand but not the same size: Old one is
250GB and the new one is 500GB. The old partition size is 29.8GB and the
new partition size is 30.02GB.

Hello Meinolf,

Thank you for your continued follow-ups.
May I ask then what condition(s) about the hard drive has to be met in
order for restoring Windows 2008 to succeed?

Hello Meinolf,

This is going to be off-topic but what cpu, RAM(size) and host OS are
you using to run what VM? I am interested in VM but never had a chance
to try it yet.

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Hello Meinolf,

My PC hardware is Opteron 244x2(1.8GHz) and 4GB DDR400. I guess I can
use this to try VM.
I understood your PC hardware but the rest is not clear to me. May I ask
again what the host OS is on which a VM software is installed? What VM
software is installed on the host? What OS(es) are/is installed on the VM?

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Hello churin,

My test server runs 2003 and Virtual server is installed like a normal application
on it. If you run a virtual machine you can install most OS you like so as
you install it on real hardware. You need the normal installation software
to install VM's.

See here about Virtual server, it's free from MS:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/virtualserver/

Demo:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...34a7ec7bbcc/MS_VS2005_BUILD_062007/index.html

Re: Windows Complete PC Restore failed - Windows 2008

Hellow Meinolf,

Thank you for the reference links. My questions so far are based on the
assumption that you are using Virtual PC because I was not aware of
another virtualization software or Virtual Server. Sorry for my repeated
off-target questions.
Thank you again for your help.
