Re: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

After investigating the error logs produced by the installer to get a
clue about what was going on, I took the following two steps and the
windows update patch successfully ran:

1) Kill the process tree of ArpWrapper.exe (This was probably just
blocking step 2, you need to make sure nothing from this folder is
running even it means booting in safe mode so that step 2 will
complete successfully, otherwise the open file handles will stop the
de-compression algorithm.)
2) Uncompress the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder as
well as all of its subfolders. You can do this by right clicking on
the folder and going to properties -> advanced -> uncheck the
"compress contents to save disk space" box. Click "Ok", then click
"Apply" and tell it to apply to the folder as well as all subfolders.

Let me know if this helps!

Re: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

For me the issue was having the above mentioned directory compressed. Once I
cleared that, the update work sucessfuly. Thanks for investigating this and
providing the answer.

How to kill the process tree of ArpWrapper.exe?

Re: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

Thank you for your response, but it did not help for two reasons.

1.) I am insufficiently technical to know how to kill the process tree of
ArpWrapper.exe, and I am a little afraid of fooling around by myself to try
figuring it out. Can you help me with this?
2.) The folder you refer to is not compressed, so this cannot be part of the
issue.

Can you or someone else please help more/again with the problem. I am being
driven mad by the constant messages to install the update when I shut down.
I cannot install the update or stop the messages or find any way of deleting
the uninstalled update. Right now, I'd settle for anything that would give
me some relief.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can HELP, PLEASE.

Re: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

I have no idea of how to kill the process tree of the execution file as
well...however, I have directly gone to step no. 2 as mentioned by
psteijn@gmail.com without bothering much of the previous step. There were
messages popping up during the decompression process saying that SQL
manegement file is being used by other process, I just ignored them and
proceeded with the decompression. Eventually, I able to get through the
update. Hope this will help.

RE: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

This patch has been a source of frustration for several weeks since my system
always wants to install it and never can. My SQL directory is not compressed
so that suggestion isn't going to help. How about a patch that we can install
ourselves so we are not treated like a bunch of mushrooms? Or just correct
thiss self installing update because it is obvious a lot of users are having
issues here.

Thanks for trying, but your solution does not help me. My C:\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server folder is not compressed in the first place. Does
anyone have any other ideas?

FYI -- I've already called Microsoft's free support service, and the
"engineers" there were completely clueless, spoke practically no English, and
insisted on continuing to try up to the point where they wasted a full two
hours of my time.

Are you seeing hex code 0x6D9E as well?
Try searching for additional diagnostics
using the decimal equivalent (28062)?

The solution for many of these codes seems to depend on how
the product was initially installed and whether access to the original
install files is still available by the same user.

I've been wondering how many of these users actually need SQL at all.
If they don't use it perhaps it would be best if they simply uninstalled
the product completely? <eg>

Since you are "non-technical" what do you use SQL for?
Perhaps the simplest solution would be to uninstall
the product completely? ; }

That's why newsgroups, forums or E-mail are often better
help mechanisms.

BTW your Me too! postings are completely devoid of symptom
details. I think it would be a good idea to start your own thread
either here or in the forum for SQL Setup so you don't cause any
more confusion with the OP's incident and its resolution.
Alternatively, try using the free Microsoft support again, this time
using communication by E-mail--no problems with "accents"
that way. ; }

Good luck

RE: Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)

I had the same problem, but after I turned on all the services related to
SQLSever. I was able to update the SP.
To turn on the services:

1. Click on Start, and then Run, type in msconfig, and click on OK.
2. Click on Services tab, and check all the services with the word "SQL" in
it, then click on Ok.
3. You have to restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, try to update again. Hopefully this may help.

If you are unable to update the MS Office, do the same, but turn on "Office
Source Engine".

I have been searching for a solution to this problem for 2 months with no
result until now. After following your instructions, the update loaded
without a problem. Please accept my sincere thanks for posting this fix.
