..NET Framework updates and service packs quite often fail when applications
are in use on a system.

I strongly recommend:
[a] Installing .NET Framework updates and service packs via scheduled
events when no user is logged on, or
Installing .NET Framework updates and service packs from the console
when it's known for sure that no other Framework-based applications are in
use.

If the update fails in both of those scenarios, then you might have a
defective installer, or a defective installation of the applicable .NET
Framework.

It's also conceivable that the detection logic of the update is defective,
and the machine does not even have the .NET Framework v3.0 installed -- in
which case the update would also fail installation.

Re: KB932471

Lawrence,

Update failed in both suggested scenarios. These machines have .NET 3.0 SP1
installed. (3.1.21022)

This particular update (KB932471) has failed on all 32 machines that WSUS
has tried to install it on. Manual install from TechNet CD also failed.

I'm posting here to decipher the error code the update is returning, rather
than generic reasons of failure.

Re: KB932471

It's been a couple of years and I do not recall the error number but when .net
3.0 SP1 failed on some of my systems I uninstalled 3.0 and re-installed it. Then
all the updates started to work.

There are 10 type of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Re: KB932471

Tried that too -
Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 -- Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 cannot be uninstalled because it will affect
other applications that are installed. For more information, see
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91126.

Solved: KB932471

Solved: KB932471

KB932471 is included in .NET 3.0 SP1.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945826

Yet WSUS tries to install it. (on 30+ machines. ) Obviosly some incorrect
detection logic in WSUS.
