Using 2008 CALs on 2003 terminal server

Can you do it? My experience is that 2008 retail CALs won't work on a 2003
terminal server, despite several people stating that it will.

Can anyone shed some light on this (I get "license code not recognized" trying
to enter a valid CAL)

thanks

You can "downgrade" the CALs to work on a 2003 TS server. You won't,
AFAIK, be able to reverse it later, though....

It's certainly allowed, as documented here:

Windows Server 2008 Downgrade Rights
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/downgrade-
rights.aspx

The best thing you can do is to use the "telephone method" when you
install the TS CALs on the Licensing Server, i.e. phone the
Clearinghouse.

I'm a bit confused. Am I right about not being able to upgrade later?--

No, you can later upgrade your servers to 2008 and your 2008 TS
CALs will be valid. But for the 2003 TS CALs (used on a W2K
server), there was no automatic upgrade. It means that you have to
phone the Clearinghouse when you upgrade to get a new license pack.

Thanks Vera - very useful. I spent a happy 20 minutes repeating license codes to
the "offshore" call centre and another 10 listening to some 70s soul while he
went away to ask someone what I meant by "downgrade".

But it worked in the end!
