Suddenly I cannot open a pdf file?

I received a pdf file today in Outlook Express. When I clicked on it Windows
said there was no program associated with the file name. Huh? I've opened
hundreds of them....what's this about? So I went to Folder Options and sure
enough there was no pdf file extension in the list. So I put one in and
created the association to Adobe 8.1, which is in my computer. It still will
not open. If I save the file I can open it at will from the Adobe program.
But this is not the way it has been. Whenever I click on a pdf file Windows
always opened it up with Adobe Acrobat. Can someone help?

What happens when you click on a saved pdf file? If it says it doesn't
know what to use, then associate it with Adobe and check the 'remember'
check box.

Someone correct me, but you might be able to force the association in
Adobe. Some programs have in the 'options' menu the ability to
associate the program with file types.

Try:
In Outllook Express go to Tools > Options > Security tab, under Virus
protection. Remove the tick from beside "Do not allow attachments to be saved
or opened that could be potentially a virus". Click Apply and then OK. Try
again with the pdf file.

Thanks Big, but I tried just that. I don't remember seeing a 'remember' but
when I clicked on the file Windows said "....there is no program associated
with this file extension, please create one in the "folder options' control
panel. " It never did open the pdf. I ended up save as, then opened the
file from the Adobe program.

Hi Catt,

Did you try a System Restore to when it worked properly? Or you could
install Foxit Reader to set the extension and then open Adobe Reader to
set it as default. But you may wind up liking Foxit better. Other than
it not being able to open a PDF in a browser window like Adobe, it's
leaner and meaner.

No I didn't think of a restore. I wouldn't think it necessary but I'll try
it. There are so many updates from everyone it's hard to keep track. I
don't think I'll ever click an update from microsoft again, it just
complicates things.

sure enough, you were right, it corrected itself.

Glad to hear it worked for you Catt.

I tried SR yesterday trying to get my Paperport PDF print drivers to
work when they suddenly stopped, but as usual in my findings, SR failed.
I restored an image instead.
