Third Parties Who Run Windows Virtual Machines as Outsourced Service?

Are there any ISPs who would take a virtual machine we supply to them and
run it on their premises, occasionally stopping the virtual machine to do a
full image backup? We would access the computer by terminal services.

I'm looking for this at a rate of under $30/month. I'm aware of vendors
who would do this for $300/month, which seems laughable considering they
could run 20 virtual machines on a $5K server. We figured our cost to do
it internally on our own servers around $60/month per virtual machine, so
I'm hoping someone out there has cheaper electricity and economy of scale.

I wouldn't expose the company knownledge, license keys, personal data to any
provider. It depends on what's stored on this server, though.

I would spend this +30 bucks to the inhouse solution. If you need access to
the TS from the wild, get a router with protocol-based QoS, so the tcp/3389
traffic gets preferred. For security, you could shift the default 3389 rdp
port somewhere else or use VPN/SSh to get into the network.

Outsourcing to save 1 dollar per day?

$30 a day that includes the hardware to run your VM, the network
connectivity, the firewall, the ISP, the power consumption, the building
expenses, etc etc etc

I'm thinking you missed some critical pieces in your calculations :)

It's not about money primarily. I would outsource to save hassle of
maintaining backups, constantly watching for uptime of machines, etc.
Saving one trip to the office at 3am to bring back up a server by itself is
worth outsourcing.

I agree with you that critical resources would stay in house.

Maybe. Then again there are companies doing web hosting at $5/month for
hundreds of MB of dataspace, and who can imagine how they make the economics
of that work.

data space <> servers and the critical uptime that is required for such.
Your comparing apples to oranges.

A web server is a critical resource to most companies who pay those
companies $5 to $30/month to run the web server.

Ok I understand, but somehow the solutions stays odd to me. You must
have a failover ISP and the connection must be fast enough,
latency/bandwidth. Here in germany it is often a problem to even get two
independent lines and that is also pretty expensive ~600 euro for two
symetric 2MBit lines, +traffic*euro/traffic. If the worst comes to the
worst, the staff
solely can play hearts on windows thin clients.

If the TSP (Terminal Service Provider) makes regular backup, one must
restore the right tape/file. Either you do it your self or you call in the
24/7 service line and tell them which files/trees. You could connect also to
your company and do the same. Ack, 3am hurts...

Sorry Will, I don't get the point of outsourcing TS, since our approach is
to
be as independent of 3rd parties as possible. I don't want talk it bad. We
have no experiences with such a solution neither I've worried about all the
gotchas. Maybe it's worth a try.

However, wish you luck Will.

Re: Third Parties Who Run Windows Virtual Machines as Outsourced Service?

I'm sorry but if you're paying $5 - $30 for a simply hosting company then no
it's not critical. yes it may be critical to them but in the end you get
what you pay for. The agreements that go with these types of service are
very specific in what they are liable for and it is typically very little.
No guarantees of uptime, no guarantees of data preservations, etc etc etc.
