2008 server install with only AD setup is over 11G

I've just received a 2008 server for a client that already has 12G of OS data
on it. I was hoping to create an emergency backup onto a DVD after I get
things configured; however, I'm not willing to span 3 DVDs. What can I
remove to get the install down under 4G? I'm very surprised/disappointed
that with little/nothing configured or any data moved over to the server that
I've got nearly a 12G footprint JUST for the OS.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Hello Paul,

That's a problem of the new OS 2008. The minimum you need for a restore is
the system state backup, nothing more. Ofcourse it will be better to have
also the complete system drive. I would recommend to use an external harddrive
for backup. Additional do not forget, if the system state is to old you will
loose all domain configuration since the last backup was made. I personnaly
would think about a second DC for redundancy, which is recommended from most
people working with AD.

Really,
A bare install of the OS is nearly 12G, if so that's ridiculous. I'd like
to hear confirmation of this from others. I've heard this being hearalded by
the media as being so modular.

Then my only choice for a backup is a HDD using MS's mystery backup program
that doesn't allow me to view the drive, scary.

Maybe I should roll back to 2003.

Thanks,
Paul

Hello Paul,

The point is that VSS works fine and additional disk become bigger, faster
and cheaper. It's also easier with configuration to choose a complete disk,
instead of playing around with different folders. I personally like also
more the older way before 2003.
